Sony Ericsson Dedicating Itself To Smartphones

You are in a Smartphone News Post

If you're a fan of Sony Ericsson's smartphones, whether that's because of excellent cameras, or the inclusion of video game controls, we've got some good news for you: in a recent phone call with investors, the company revealed its intention to abandon feature phones altogether, and commit to all its releases being smartphones over the course of next year.

Admittedly, SE's well on its way to being smartphone-only when it comes to handsets, but it still manages to churn out a few feature phones, like the recent Sony Ericsson txt, a messaging-centered dumbphone. Understandably, shifting away from such models won't represent a major strategy change for the company, but it will mean that there are just that many additional researches dedicated to creating future smartphones.

With the clock ticking on Symbian, it stands to reason that SE will become even more centered on producing Android models. The way things are looking, by this time next year, there's a chance that nearly all SE phones could be Androids.

Besides a new focus on smartphones, what else does the future hold for Sony Ericsson? The company didn't give away too many details, but one tidbit is that an autosteroscopic 3D phone is in the works; no word on an ETA.

ChevronWP7 Labs Coming In A Few Weeks

We've heard about the $9 you'll have to pay in order to unlock your Windows Phone with Chevron WP7 (as a nice alternative to the much higher price of a developer account and device unlock). The solution will be called Chevron WP7 Labs and is officially landing soon.

According to the Chevron WP7 blog, Labs is only a few weeks away from launch. It will allow "hobbyist developers to install, run, and debug unsigned applications on their personal Windows Phone" and will cost $9 per token (one token equals one Windows Phone device registration). The best thing (next best thing after the price) is that it will not void your device's warranty. To read more details about the unlocking procedure itself, follow the source link below (though we'll give you details at the time of launch).

RIM Publishes Display Specs, Simulators for Bold 9790, Curve 9380

You are in a BlackBerry Post

Last month, we saw two unreleased BlackBerry handsets show up in the BlackBerry App World developer portal. The Bold 9790 and Curve 9380 have yet to be formally announced by RIM, even though we've been able to learn a good deal about what to expect from them. Today, RIM posted some additional specs for the pair on its Inside BlackBerry Developer's Blog.

It's unusual for unannounced smartphones to be so casually referred-to by their manufacturers, but apparently RIM has no problem letting people know about this pair. This time around, it wanted to alert developers to the display characteristics of the phones, including screen size and pixel density. The company has also updated its simulation tools to support these two models.

Both BlackBerrys share a 360 x 480 resolution, but their differing display sizes result in a big swing in pixel density, from 189ppi with the Curve 9380 up to 245ppi on the Bold 9790 with its 2.44-inch screen.

The 9790 is more or less Bold 9900 hardware, supposed to include a 1.2GHz CPU and NFC support. The 9380 goes the full-touch route, having no hardware QWERTY keyboard (and explaining the need for a larger display), and likely containing an 800MHz chip.

Google Removes Voice From iTunes App Store Due To Bugs

You are in an iPhone Post

If you just decided you need to install Google Voice on your iPhone you will probably be surprised to see that the application is no longer available in the Apple iTunes App Store.

According to Vincent Paquet, Senior Product Manager for Google Voice, the applications has been intentionally pulled because it "had a bug that caused the app to crash at sign in", so it got removed in order "not affect additional users until the fix gets published". The bug seems to affect only some users but if you don't have the app installed you'll have to wait for Google to republish it with the proper fixes.

Some U.S. Apple Stores Reportedly Selling Unlocked iPhone 4S

You are in an iPhone Post

The iPhone 4S has been available on pre-order since October 7 and in stores since last Friday, October 14. These models are available for purchase on contract but Apple promised unlocked iPhone 4S devices starting November.

Turns out that some Apple Stores in America are reportedly already selling unlocked Apple-phones, according to information published by 9to5mac. The activation is done via iTunes when the device is plugged in, at which time a "Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked!" message is displayed. Such an unlocked iPhone allegedly connected to T-Mobile's EDGE network via an O2 SIM-card on roaming but the phone itself contained a removable AT&T microSIM card.
