The worst-kept secret in smartphones today continues to show up in news everywhere, still yet-to-be-officially-announced. Samsung's Nexus Prime / Galaxy Nexus has just made a new appearance, displayed in Best Buy's Cellebrite system. Although we expect the smartphone to arrive on Verizon as the Galaxy Nexus, you can still see the Nexus Prime code name being used even this late in the game. The leaked screenshot from Verizon's computers, at least ? the one we looked at earlier today - has the phone as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
While this appearance doesn't really tell us much new about the phone, it raises an interesting question about how the handset will be sold. After all, the Nexus S was a Best Buy exclusive; could this next iteration follow-suit as an exclusive for the retailer? We think it's too early to say, but there are some reasons why it seems unlikely. Without a Galaxy S II on-hand, Verizon needs a real powerhouse to attract buyers. While there are models like the Droid RAZR in the wings, the Galaxy Nexus has the potential to be huge for the carrier; why limit sales by locking them to Best Buy stores? Granted, the carrier might not have much of a say in things; we hope to learn for sure what's going on after Samsung's event scheduled for next week.
