Google HTC Nexus One Gets Android 2.3.6 Update

You are in an Android Post

The Google Nexus One managed to stay up-to-date all this time mainly because Mountain View managed to keep its promise and continuously push out refreshes as they were stable. The phone recently got its Android 2.3.6 update.

The Nexus One Android 2.3.6 build is GRK39F and, from the description, it contains "important bug fixes and security patches". What you need to do in order to apply is to download the ROM file from the source link and then go through the update process (you most probably know by now). Let us know if you find anything out of the ordinary in the new ROM.

Android 2.3.5 ROM for Samsung Galaxy S II Leaks

You are in an Android Post

The Samsung Galaxy S II is still THE Android phone of the moment (at least until one of those HD screen-enabled beasts are released) and the manufacturer is trying to maintain the phone up to date as much as possible.

The latest leak represents Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread for the Samsung Galaxy S II. The firmware version is I9100XXKI3, which translates to European version 3, dated September 15. For those of you who can't wait for the update to hit your devices via official channels, head over to the source link and grab the update (of course, acknowledging the risks involved).

Android Vulnerability Allows Stealth Malware Installation

You are in an Android Post

Reports continue to come in on the dark side of the Android platform: malware and vulnerabilities. According to The Register, two serious Android security vulnerabilities were reported more than a month ago and are still unpatched.

The first is a "permission-escalation vulnerability" that enables an application to install other applications without the user being warned or prompted for consent. Apparently, all Android users are affected. The "Linux kernel privilege escalation" will enable an infected application to gain privileges and full control over a device. Google declined to comment on any of the two aforementioned vulnerabilities but if you want to know more about the flaws, check out the video below:

AT&T Samsung Infuse 4G Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread ROM Leaked

You are in an Android Post

The Samsung-made AT&T Infuse 4G was supposed to get its Gingerbread treat since mid-August but so far there was only word of a maintenance update -- rumored to be a pre-Gingerbread update.

An Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread ROM has been leaked for the device and it is build I997UCKI4. It might be a good indication that the official update is not far out but if you just can't wait for it to be pushed to your phone, give the leak a try (but insert unofficial ROM update warning here).

Developer Releases VLC for Android Pre-Alpha Build

You are in an Android Post

Late last year, we heard that the open-source media player VLC was destined for an Android port to arrive sometime in early 2011. Soon, we moved into what was clearly no longer "early" 2011, and VLC had yet to materialize. In March we got a small update on the project, learning it might be coming out in beta in a few months' time. Again, the window passed with no release. As of today, there's still no official release, but one Android developer has taken matters into his own hands, compiling what he's calling a pre-alpha version that you can check out now.

Why have we been patiently waiting for VLC for so long? After all, there are lots of other Android media players out there, right? Part of the appeal of VLC is its near-universal compatibility. Most of the time, it will play whatever file you throw at it without blinking. Add to that some powerful tools for viewing streaming video, and it's enough to keep our interest piqued.

Curious developers have been able to compile their own builds of VLC for Android for some time now, but CVPCS (whom you might remember from his CyanogenMod work) has made his publicly available. There are two different APKs: one for phones with processors supporting NEON floating-point operations, and one without. Download the proper one for your hardware, and you'll be able to check out this very early version of VLC for Android, as we all continue to wait for an official release.

Verizon Selling $100 Pantech Breakout LTE Android September 22

You are in an Android Post

We've been keeping our eye on the Pantech Breakout for a little while now, expecting it to launch as the first budget-priced Android using Verizon's high-speed LTE 4G network. Last week we heard that the phone would likely be released this week, on Thursday, September 22. With just a few days to spare, Verizon has finally announced the Breakout, confirming the September 22 launch rumor, and giving the phone a $100 on-contract price tag.

You may not be swayed by the Pantech brand name alone, but look past that to the Breakout's hardware, and you'll find some decent specs for what's becoming a mid-range Android configuration. The phone has a single-core 1GHz processor, four-inch WVGA screen, and five-megapixel rear and VGA front-facing cameras. Pantech includes an 8GB microSD card for storage, and will bring the phone to market running Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Verizon's confirmed one rumored ability we were hoping the Breakout would get: WiFi hotspot support for connecting up to 10 devices. Of course, you probably won't be using close to that many at once, but you have the feature there when you need it.

Pantech just started introducing Android phones to North America earlier this year with the Crossover on AT&T. Any opinions on how its efforts are shaping up so far? Would you buy a Pantech Android over an HTC or Motorola?

Meizu MX Quad-Core Android Smartphone Priced-Out

You are in an Android Post

According to what's since become clear was an overly-ambitious timeline, the first quad-core Android tablets would be a reality by now, with quad-core chips in smartphones by the end of the year. NVIDIA's plans for its Kal-el are a little behind scheduled at the moment, but that's just the opportunity another player needs to swoop in for the glory. China's Meizu is planning to release its MX smartphone by the end of the month, and it includes an option for a quad-core processor. The pricing structure for the Android has just been revealed, and Chinese Android fans will soon be able to take this powerhouse home for just under $800.

Only the 32GB model of the MX has four cores under its hood; a cheaper 16GB version is dual-core and will sell for about $625. We're still not sure whose chip will make it into the phones, but Samsung has a component (being used in the next PlayStation portable system) that might fit the bill.

Regardless of storage capacity or processor might, both versions of the Meizu MX will have a 4.3-inch qHD display. We're still in the dark as to a lot of the smartphone's specs, but we have a feeling that "quad core" is all many of you need to know about the handset.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo Gets Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread Update

You are in an Android Post

When Sony Ericsson announced the Xperia Arc S and the Xperia Neo V (hardware refresh devices shipping with the new version of Android), they also made it public that Google Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread updates will start rolling-out for all 2011 Xperia models.

According to reports, the Google platform refresh is rolling out as we speak for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo. Aside from the new version of Android, the update brings several other features to the table too, like a new 3D panorama camera feature, Swype, the ability to take screenshots and several other enhancements to Facebook inside Xperia. Version numbers should be bumped from 4.0.A.2.368 to 4.0.1.A.0.283; if you didn't already get the update, wait a little bit more as it is rolling out gradually.

Four Ways to Make Your Android Feel New Again

Most people keep a phone for nearly two years. Unless you're keeping things fresh, you're likely to get a bit bored with the look and feel of your phone. And while you can't change the hardware (unless you want to buy an expensive off-contract phone), you can surely change the software. Here are four ways to make your Android feel new again, in order of easiest to most difficult.

1. Change your wallpaper

This might seem obvious, but it's amazing how much of a difference a change of wallpaper will make to your experience. Most devices let you change the lock screen wallpaper independently of the home screen, so you can get even more variety by making them different.

Our reccomendations? If you like Live Wallpapers, try Fireworks, Koi, or Super Mario. All are free.

If your battery life is on the fritz and you don't want to toll your CPU with animated backgrounds, try Backgrounds HD for a huge selection of high-resolution static images.

2. Change your lockscreen

screen1

If the "slide to unlock" function on your homescreen is feeling a bit stale, check out WidgetLocker to increase the functionality of your homescreen. This app is well worth the the $2 pricetag, as it gives you endless flexibility to make your homescreen functional. You can add widgets, place multiple sliders to quickly launch your favorite apps, and more.

3. Change your launcher

screen3

Android is unique in that you can install a third-party launcher to change your home screen interface entirely. Don't like HTC Sense, MotoBLUR, or TouchWiz? Try either LauncherPro or ADW Launcher EX. These apps let you set custom gestures for dock icons, apply visual styles to your application tray, and lots more.

4. Change your ROM!

image MIUI ROM

At the end of the day, your phone is only as good as its core software. Thankfully, there's a huge selection of third-party ROMs available from the development community that can increase your battery life, improve device performance, and drastically change the look and feel of every screen. For example, I'm currently running VillainROM on my Galaxy S II, which has improved my battery life by around 20%. Another popular ROM series is MIUI, which transforms your Android in what appears to be a totally different operating system.

screen2

To load a custom ROM, you must root your device and install a custom bootloader. To do this, allocate at least an hour of time to make it happen, as rooting often involves running through a handful of steps. Check out the development forum for your device over at XDA; you're likely to find a sticky thread with instructions on how to get started.
