LG Marquee (Sprint Optimus Black): First Press Shots

You are in an Android Post

It looks like Sprint's version of the LG Optimus Black -- dubbed the LG Marquee, we recently learned -- will bring a little less black than the global version, adopting a gray pinstripe for the back battery cover. Other than that slight change, however, Sprint's LS855 looks very much like the P970 which has been selling internationally for some months now.

Although Marquee promises to deliver one of the brightest screens on the market, the rest of its specs are pretty mid-range: 1GHz, single-core OMAP 3630, WVGA resolution, 512MB RAM, and a five-megapixel camera. Last we heard, Marquee was scheduled to ship on October 2nd, and should also find a spot in the lineups of US Cellular, Alltel, and Virgin.

Sprint LG Marquee Confirmed as LG Optimus Black

You are in an Android Post

Last week, Radio Shack uploaded a video to YouTube showing off the new, white edition of the HTC EVO 3D. What really caught our eye, though, wasn't the autostereoscopic handset, but another shown for just a brief moment; an establishing shot of the expo at which the video was recorded shows the LG Marquee, a smartphone name we hadn't heard before. At the time, there was some speculation that the device might be the LG Optimus Black, since the glance we got looked similar enough to the Black, and it's an LG model we've been expecting to arrive on Sprint. Now it looks like we can confirm the Marquee as none other than the Black, thanks to some Sprint Cellebrite data.

Cellebrite's products, often used to transfer contact information from one handset to another, can see themselves updated with information on new phones before the handsets arrive. In this case, an entry was added to the master list of Sprint phones that identifies the LG Marquee as model LS-855, an Android we've known for some time to be the Optimus Black.

Sadly, there's no indication here of just when me might hope to expect the Marquee to actually show up for sale, but at least we have one mystery out of the way.

Radio Shack Exposes LG Marquee; Is It Sprint's LG Black?

You are in an Android Post

Back in August we learned that Radio Shack would be offering a special white version of HTC's EVO 3D sometime this month. The company recently took to YouTube to show the phone off, with footage coming from this year's Radio Shack Business Summit in Texas. While there's not much new worth talking about when it comes to the EVO 3D except its lily-white veneer, you might notice that one of the video's establishing shots of the expo reveals a phone we haven't heard of before: the LG Marquee.

All we get of the phone is this one brief shot, showing carrier badging for Sprint. The popular theory going around right now is that the Marquee could be Sprint's version of the LG Optimus Black. Sure, it looks enough like the Black as it's been released, and the front-facing camera is in the right spot, but it's still just mostly guesswork at this point. Any other theories about what this one might be?

Black News in New Focus

Phil McCarten/ReutersSteve Capus, president of NBC News.

NBC News and Interactive One, a network of Web sites aimed at African-Americans, plan to announce a partnership on Monday that will combine the editorial and sales resources of both properties. The partnership will focus on aligning NBC’s African-American news site, TheGrio.com, and Interactive One’s news Web site, NewsOne.com.

“Now, for the first time, you have a news-gathering and producing organization solely dedicated to African-Americans at scale, and that really has not happened for decades,” said Tom Newman, the president of Interactive One, a digital subsidiary of Radio One.

While there are no staff changes imminent for either Web site — editorial staffs in the newsrooms of each site range from two to 10 people — reporters on both sites will be able to collaborate with one another on content.

The looming election season of 2012 and the increase in niche Web sites and advertising to African-Americans and other minority groups helped to propel the alliance. TheGrio will coordinate the sharing of content from one site to the next, and NewsOne will take the lead on advertising sales efforts, a critical part of the alliance.

“Election coverage is going to be our watershed moment,” Mr. Newman said.

According to comScore, from May 2010 to May 2011, the total audience for TheGrio grew 300 percent, to 1.3 million viewers from 319,000. NewsOne also had significant growth in the same period, increasing its viewership to 881,000 from 356,000.

“They are basically offering a more robust sales proposition, bigger audiences and the opportunity to get ads in front of more eyeballs,” said Steve Capus, the president of NBC News. “We instantly grew the business as a result of this partnership.”

Some of the top advertisers for Interactive One include Ford, American Airlines, Home Depot and Hewlett-Packard.
