Samsung Focus S Passes FCC, Mango a Week Away & Dell Leaving?

You are in a Windows Phone Post

In today?s show we begin by talking about the recent confirmation we received from the Windows Phone blog regarding Mango and it?s release date within either next week or the following. We also go through the Samsung Focus S and how it already received FCC approval. We talk about the reasons why Windows Phone 7 doesn?t support dual-core processors, and why that?s still not an issue any of us should worry about. We breeze through Windows 8 and how it seems to support more than the Metro UI with a phone call feature, and details on when we might get the WhatsApp messenger many of us have been waiting for. We end the Good section by going through some recent awards that Windows Phone 7 has received thanks to its innovative design.

In the bad section we cover the sad news about Dell probably dropping Windows Phone 7 in the future, and why we think the rumors hold water.

All this and more after the break.

Adobe Announces Flash Player 11 With Focus On 3D Gaming

You are in a Smartphone News Post

Adobe's Flash has a bit of an uncertain future on mobile devices. Ever since Apple snubbed it with the iPhone, what was once a mainstay of the PC-based web experience is seeing new technologies like HTML5 arrive to muscle-in on its turf. In order to stay relevant, Adobe needs to keep content providers churning out Flash; one of the ways it can keep developers focused is through the introduction of stand-out features, and that's what it hopes to achieve with the release of Flash Player 11, announced today for an October release.

Flash Player 11 will be arriving on Android systems and the BlackBerry PlayBook; obviously, iOS is out for now, but the platform will still get some new Adobe content thanks to the release of AIR 3.

The big push for Flash Player 11 is gaming, and an effort to produce console-quality 3D and 2D titles. While that sounds particularly stressful for smartphone hardware, Adobe claims FP11 could actually offer performance improvements over previous releases, with a supposed 1000-fold increase in rendering performance, thanks to hardware acceleration. Sounds good, but we'll believe it when we see it.

Beyond gaming, FP11 brings Adobe Flash Access to mobile devices, letting them view DRM-protected premium video content. The first Flash Player releases will start coming out next month; there's no precise information just yet on when it will be available for all platforms.

AT&T Samsung Focus S Passes FCC

AT&T jumped the gun just a little bit by making its upcoming Windows Phone Mango line-up public this week, probably to further emphasize on it being the "premier" carrier for the Redmond-platform-powered phones. Among the phones (HTC Titan and Focus Flash), there's the Samsung Focus S, which just passed FCC.

The phone that got Commission clearance is the SGH-i937, most probably the Samsung Focus S. Given the recently made official Samsung naming convention, expect the Focus S to be a flagship as "S" stands for Super Smart, at the top of all models, a letter only highest-end flagship phones will wear.

That being said, expect to see a Super AMOLED Plus display that looks gorgeous on the Galaxy S II, premium materials, a general outer aspect that somewhat resembles the Android-powered Galaxy S II and, of course, Windows Phone Mango, whenever that will be made official this fall.

Official specs made public by AT&T talk about a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, 1.4GHz processor, radio capable of 4G speeds, a front facing 1.3-megapixel and a rear facing eight-megapixel camera, and a very thin form factor, measuring only 8.55 millimeters.

AT&T Mango Line-Up: HTC Titan, Samsung Focus S, Focus Flash

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Windows Phone Mango is coming really soon (this week according to some rumors) and AT&T is here to back that up as the carrier just announced its fall Windows Phone 7 Mango line-up.

Continuing to be the "premier" Windows Phone carrier, AT&T will bring on the newly announced HTC Titan. The phone features a massive 4.7-inch screen, a speedy 1.5 GHz processor and an eight-megapixel camera with dual LED flash that will allegedly take great low-light pictures, aside from the front-facer for video chat.

The Samsung Focus is getting a refresh as the Focus S and AT&T will also carry it. The device packs a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display like the one on the Galaxy S II, 1.4GHz processor, radio capable of 4G speeds, a front facing 1.3-megapixel and a rear facing 8-megapixel camera. It will have a very thin form factor, measuring only 8.55 millimeters.

Last but not least there's the Focus Flash, a more budget-oriented device with a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED screen that will reduce its dimensions. Inside it features a 1.4 GHz processor and a five-megapixel camera in addition to the front-facer.

All of the above phones will be available from AT&T this fall, the period in which the Mango update will be delivered to already existing devices: HTC HD7S, HTC Surround, LG Quantum, and Samsung Focus.

Black News in New Focus

Phil McCarten/ReutersSteve Capus, president of NBC News.

NBC News and Interactive One, a network of Web sites aimed at African-Americans, plan to announce a partnership on Monday that will combine the editorial and sales resources of both properties. The partnership will focus on aligning NBC’s African-American news site, TheGrio.com, and Interactive One’s news Web site, NewsOne.com.

“Now, for the first time, you have a news-gathering and producing organization solely dedicated to African-Americans at scale, and that really has not happened for decades,” said Tom Newman, the president of Interactive One, a digital subsidiary of Radio One.

While there are no staff changes imminent for either Web site — editorial staffs in the newsrooms of each site range from two to 10 people — reporters on both sites will be able to collaborate with one another on content.

The looming election season of 2012 and the increase in niche Web sites and advertising to African-Americans and other minority groups helped to propel the alliance. TheGrio will coordinate the sharing of content from one site to the next, and NewsOne will take the lead on advertising sales efforts, a critical part of the alliance.

“Election coverage is going to be our watershed moment,” Mr. Newman said.

According to comScore, from May 2010 to May 2011, the total audience for TheGrio grew 300 percent, to 1.3 million viewers from 319,000. NewsOne also had significant growth in the same period, increasing its viewership to 881,000 from 356,000.

“They are basically offering a more robust sales proposition, bigger audiences and the opportunity to get ads in front of more eyeballs,” said Steve Capus, the president of NBC News. “We instantly grew the business as a result of this partnership.”

Some of the top advertisers for Interactive One include Ford, American Airlines, Home Depot and Hewlett-Packard.
