Sony Ericsson Backtracks On Ice Cream Sandwich Xperia Promise

You are in an Android Post

Earlier today we heard that Sony Ericsson had made a decision that would make users of its Android phones very happy, that it had committed to releasing Android Ice Cream Sandwich updates across its full lineup of this year's models. That kind of future support is a question that's on the minds of plenty of Android users, but none of us expected such a definitive promise this early on. Sadly, it turns out there's probably a good reason we were surprised, since Sony Ericsson has now backtracked from that claim.

The company clarified its commitment to future Android software releases by saying, "when it comes to future platforms of the Android OS, we will make them available to consumers in a timely manner, as long as they improve the user experience and are viable from a hardware point of view."

Honestly, that sounds totally reasonable. We just don't know what kind of toll ICS is going to place on Android hardware, and since we haven't heard promises of ICS from other manufacturers, it stands to reason that they're not privy to that info quite yet, either. For now, we'll just have to wait a bit longer to learn what the future holds for all of SE's Xperias.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich On Track For October/November

You are in an Android Post

We recently uncovered some new evidence that helps us to nail-down the name of the Android Ice Cream Sandwich launch device as the Nexus Prime, as well as giving us some hints about the device's hardware capabilities. The hardware's just part of it, though, making the phone's release dependent on the availability of ICS. Google's been talking about a Q4 release for the updated operating system, but we may be able to narrow that down a little more now, thanks to a comment Google's Eric Schmidt recently made.

Schmidt stated, speaking at the Dreamforce conference, that ICS "is being released in October/November". Admittedly, that doesn't do too much to alter the release forecast, but it does allow us to eliminate the weeks leading up to this year's holiday season. That means we won't see a repeat of last year's Nexus S release, which first dropped halfway through December.

Besides giving us this update on the ICS release, Schmidt poked a bit of fun at the naming scheme that Google's adopted for its major Android releases, commenting that the team had started calling this one Ice Cream Sandwich "for some reason". Because it's delicious, that's why!
