Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo Gets Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread Update

When Sony Ericsson announced the Xperia Arc S and the Xperia Neo V (hardware refresh devices shipping with the new version of Android), they also made it public that Google Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread updates will start rolling-out for all 2011 Xperia models.

According to reports, the Google platform refresh is rolling out as we speak for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo. Aside from the new version of Android, the update brings several other features to the table too, like a new 3D panorama camera feature, Swype, the ability to take screenshots and several other enhancements to Facebook inside Xperia. Version numbers should be bumped from 4.0.A.2.368 to 4.0.1.A.0.283; if you didn't already get the update, wait a little bit more as it is rolling out gradually.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G Now Available From AT&T

Just as we were promised at the beginning of the month, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G is, as of now, available online over at AT&T. Android gamers no longer have to go to Verizon for the Play but now have a GSM alternative.

The phone costs $49.99 with a two-year contract or $399.99 without one and packs a 1GHz Snapdragon MSM8255 processor, 1GB of ROM, 512MB of RAM, four-inch display and 4G speeds. To see the exact AT&T model, check out our hands-on or read our full Sony Ericsson Xperia Play review.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray Manual Published

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray was launched together with the Xperia Active at the end of June and should already be available in some countries or regions, like the U.K. for instance, where according to Amazon, it should be available for a week or so now.

The Xperia Ray has a 3.3-inch display with Mobile Bravia Engine, 1GHz processor, eight-megapixel camera with Exmor R sensor and runs Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread. For those waiting for the phone to be delivered (or those that still need to decide whether to purchase it or not) you can now read the manual as the manufacturer made it available. It shows the phone and its features off so you might want to take a look if you're into the Xperia Ray.

AT&T Adding Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G To Its Stable This Month

Earlier this summer, AT&T revealed that the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, the "PlayStation phone" with a slide-out gamepad instead of a QWERTY keyboard, would be finding a home with the carrier. So far, Android gamers in the States have only had the option of using the Xperia Play on Verizon. Come September 18, AT&T will join the fray with the Xperia Play 4G.

Besides the switch to a GSM radio, as in the international version of the smartphone, there's nothing changed from the Verizon edition. That means having a single-core 1GHz Snapdragon, Adreno 205 graphics, 512MB of RAM, and a four-inch FWVGA display.

AT&T is trying to make its Xperia Play stand out by offering the phone in a "stealth blue" shade, throwing in a Sony Ericsson Multimedia Dock and music cable, and loading the phone with some games to get you started; Dungeon Defenders Second Wave, Asphalt 6 Adrenaline, Star Battalion, Madden NFL 11, The Sims 3, Tower Bloxx: My City, and Crash Bandicoot make the cut.

When the Xperia Play 4G arrives on the eighteenth, you'll be able to pick it up for about $50 on-contract.

Sony Ericsson To Update All Current Xperia Phones To Android ICS

The next version of Android, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich, is going to be released sometime October/November, according to Google's own Eric Schmidt. Then it will be up to OEMs to issue updates for their existing phones (taking longer for some while the others acting faster).

According to a Sony Ericsson representative, all of the manufacturer's 2011 Xperia phones in this year's line-up will be updated to Android Ice Cream Sandwich. That's a lot of phones: Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, Xperia Neo, Xperia Pro, Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V, and Xperia Ray. There are no details of course as per when these updates will start rolling out but it's safe to assume that it will be in 2012 (and we hope for the first half of the year).

Sony Ericsson Backtracks On Ice Cream Sandwich Xperia Promise

Earlier today we heard that Sony Ericsson had made a decision that would make users of its Android phones very happy, that it had committed to releasing Android Ice Cream Sandwich updates across its full lineup of this year's models. That kind of future support is a question that's on the minds of plenty of Android users, but none of us expected such a definitive promise this early on. Sadly, it turns out there's probably a good reason we were surprised, since Sony Ericsson has now backtracked from that claim.

The company clarified its commitment to future Android software releases by saying, "when it comes to future platforms of the Android OS, we will make them available to consumers in a timely manner, as long as they improve the user experience and are viable from a hardware point of view."

Honestly, that sounds totally reasonable. We just don't know what kind of toll ICS is going to place on Android hardware, and since we haven't heard promises of ICS from other manufacturers, it stands to reason that they're not privy to that info quite yet, either. For now, we'll just have to wait a bit longer to learn what the future holds for all of SE's Xperias.

Sony Ericsson Reveals 1.4GHz Xperia Arc S

With the IFA ramping-up in Berlin, we're bracing for a ton of new on new smartphones to roll in. One of the first to be announced is a hardware bump to the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, the new Arc S.

If you're already familiar with the Arc, all you need to know about the Arc S is that it will be slightly faster. SE is swapping-out the 1GHz Snapdragon the Arc came with for a 1.4GHz model. That makes for a 40% speed increase on paper, and SE says that you can expect real-world performance to amount to about a 20-25% speed-up; that's not world-shattering, but it's a decent bump that should help keep the handset relevant.

The Xperia Arc S is sticking with the Arc's 4.2-inch FWVGA "Reality Display", 512MB of RAM, and 8.1-megapixel Exmor camera. Like the other new Xperias we've heard about, the Arc S will have SE's latest software tweaks, like Facebook inside Xperia, and a 3D sweep panorama mode that lets you use the phone's 2D camera to generate 3D images for viewing over HDMI on compatible displays.

Look for the Arc S to be available in five colors when it comes out this October.
