Is Apple Starting Work On A Quad-Core iPhone?

You are in an iPhone Post

Smartphones are inevitably inching-closer towards quad-core chips. While not every platform will see phones built around such chips (at least not straight away), nor every manufacturer jump at the chance to release quad-core handsets, it's something that everyone is going to have to think about at some point. Apple's a company that holds its cards awfully close to its chest, so it can be very difficult to get a strong sense of its future plans, but some evidence has been uncovered suggesting the company is at least experimenting with mobile devices built around quad-core chipsets.

The clue comes from the Clang compiler used in Apple's Xcode tools, where a developer discovered code related to CPU optimization had gained support for the Armada XP, a Marvell-made quad-core ARM chipset. Notes in the source code suggest that only in-house Apple versions of Clang are built with Armada XP optimizations enabled.

None of this means that Apple is actually planning to release a new iPhone or iPad containing a Marvell chip, but it could mean that Apple is using the Armada XP as a placeholder while it prototypes such hardware, later to be replaced by one of Apple's own A-series chips. Such a device could still be a year or two out, if Apple even decides to go ahead with a quad-core system.

Meizu MX Quad-Core Android Smartphone Priced-Out

You are in an Android Post

According to what's since become clear was an overly-ambitious timeline, the first quad-core Android tablets would be a reality by now, with quad-core chips in smartphones by the end of the year. NVIDIA's plans for its Kal-el are a little behind scheduled at the moment, but that's just the opportunity another player needs to swoop in for the glory. China's Meizu is planning to release its MX smartphone by the end of the month, and it includes an option for a quad-core processor. The pricing structure for the Android has just been revealed, and Chinese Android fans will soon be able to take this powerhouse home for just under $800.

Only the 32GB model of the MX has four cores under its hood; a cheaper 16GB version is dual-core and will sell for about $625. We're still not sure whose chip will make it into the phones, but Samsung has a component (being used in the next PlayStation portable system) that might fit the bill.

Regardless of storage capacity or processor might, both versions of the Meizu MX will have a 4.3-inch qHD display. We're still in the dark as to a lot of the smartphone's specs, but we have a feeling that "quad core" is all many of you need to know about the handset.

Samsung Galaxy S III Rumored With 2.0GHz Quad-Core CPU

You are in an Android Post

It's been a while since we heard of the Samsung Galaxy S III, the phone that comes after the exceptional Galaxy S II introduced this year at MWC in Barcelona. Rumor has it the S III will be introduced in Barcelona too, next February.

Now brace yourselves: even though it's a rumor, it speaks of a 2.0GHz quad-core CPU. Not sure where to put that as Android isn't even fully optimized for dual-core processors, but hey, raw horsepower is always welcome! There's also 1.5GB of RAM to feed that super high-end processor, 32GB of internal memory and a 4.65-inch screen. The rumor expressly names it "Super AMOLED III" which is reportedly being developed especially for the Galaxy S III, with SXGA 1280 x 1024 resolution (which is so much unlike 16:9 giving a square aspect ratio of 1.25 -- see below table, red outline).

Rumor also mentions a ten-megapixel camera capable of 1080p video recording, NFC chip inside and Android Ice Cream Sandwich with TouchWiz 5.0 on top of it. Powering all, there's 2250mAh battery.

If anyone feels these rumored specs are "too good to be true", please raise your hand! What do you find fishy among the above?
