Microsoft's Andrew Lees on Future Dual-Core, LTE Windows Phones

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Microsoft's goal for 2012 is to make Windows Phone a solid third platform offering a viable alternative to iOS and Android. Things are already starting to look good as Windows Phone Division head Andrew Lees believes an important goal has been met: Microsoft became credible again in the phone market.

Good things are already happening in Windows Phone-land and, according to Lees, this is just the beginning. Expect dual-core and LTE-enabled phones too! Current Windows Phones are all single-core "but I suspect that they will be faster in usage than any dual-core phone that you put against it, and that?s the point," said Lees. There will be dual-core Windows Phones around the time the software will be able to take advantage of the processing power offered by the new chips.

Redmond wants to approach LTE differently. Initial phones that support the network standard were both huge in size and battery usage. Lees thinks "it?s possible to do it in a way that is far more efficient, and that?s what we will be doing".

Samsung Sells $2-Galaxy S II Next To Apple Store In Sydney

You are in an Android Post

Apple is going to make its iPhone 4S available in stores two days from now, on October 14. Pre-orders sold well and according to Apple numbers, more than 1 million units were purchased in the first 24 hours.

The battle between Apple and Samsung has moved back to the market after lots of episodes in various courts around the world. According to reports, Samsung has set up a store just next to Apple's own store in Sydney. The temporary shop offers the flagship Galaxy S II for just $2 unlocked and without a contract for the first 10 people in line each day. The line is already longer than the one waiting for Apple's next phone to be available. Competition at its finest?...

Update: Our reader Haze points out in the comments that those people not lucky enough to be among the first ten will still be able to buy the phones at a hugely discounted price.

Dell Venue Pro May Never Get Wireless Hotspot Mode

You are in an Android Post

Late last month Microsoft attempted to clarify how Mango's internet sharing would arrive on existing WP7 hardware. The issue, ultimately, depended on the presence of new drivers to let Mango take full advantage of the phone's WiFi hardware. Does that mean we might hope to see the feature make it to all WP7 handsets, eventually? Some detective work by the users over at the XDA-Developers forums suggests we could be stuck with one particular WP7 phone that gets left behind the rest.

All Windows Phone models that can already form a wireless hotspot are powered by Broadcom's 4329 chip. It's so prevalent, that nearly all the models that don't yet have drivers available also use the same chip; in these cases, it appears to just be a matter of time before drivers are released, rather than any sort of hardware problem affecting the ability to deploy the feature.

The Dell Venue Pro, on the other hand, uses a Broadcom 4325 chip. Not only does that component lack 802.11 n support, it doesn't include the AP mode needed to act as a wireless hotspot. That suggests quite strongly that we'll never see wireless internet sharing working on the Venue Pro. At the least, you could always whip out a USB cable and do some tethered connection sharing.

Weather Channel App Updated With Mango Features

You are in a Windows Phone Post

The Weather Channel is one of the more popular Weather apps for Windows Phone, but they weren't the first to offer Mango support. Today, the app has finally seen an update which brings some great improvements to Windows Phone 7.5 Mango users. First off, you get fast app switching support so that the app doesn't have to reload everything every time you switch to it using the task switching. General navigation of the app seems a bit smoother, but it still takes some time downloading data on first launch. While the original version only offered one default location for the live tile, now you can turn on a "Show Live Tile" checkbox for each location that you've saved within the app. Each time you do that, a new Live Tile for that location will show up on your start screen. What's more, the new live tiles for specific locations as well as the default app are now two sided. One side will show the normal current weather information that you'd expect, and it will periodically flip over to show you a radar map of the location. That's a very cool feature! The new app also uses a background process to update Live Tiles every 30 minutes as opposed to the older push notifications method previously employed.

You can download the new Weather Channel App from the Windows Phone Marketplace.

RIM Introduces NFC-Based 'BlackBerry Tag' To Share and Connect

RIM Co-CEO Jim Balsillie unveiled RIM's 'BlackBerry Tag today while holding his keynote at the GITEX conference in Dubai. Tag is a new way for BlackBerry users to connect with one another and share multimedia content.

The next BlackBerry 7 OS update will include BlackBerry Tag and with its features users will be able to share information, such as contact information, documents, URLs, photos and other multimedia content, by simply bumping their devices together.

With the help of NFC (Near Field Communication), BlackBerry Messenger users will also be able to add each other to their friends list by using BlackBerry Tag. Current NFC-enabled phones like the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 and BlackBerry Curve 9350/9360/9370 will be the first ones to get Tag but RIM is also making the APIs public so that developers can incorporate "tap to share" in their own applications.
