The Future of Microsoft TellMe on Windows Phone

You are in a Windows Phone Post

While Apple's new "Siri" speech interface on the iPhone 4S may have a few more features and a little more intelligence than Windows Phone's current speech interface, Microsoft isn't standing still has been working on similar features for a while now. They put together this video that was released months ago of how a future version of Windows Phone will work with a more natural, personalized, and adaptive speech interface. Microsoft also shows how this will be highly integrated with Xbox and Kinect, which will be pretty cool. After all we know already that Windows Phone's speech UI shares the same system as the Xbox Kinect speech interface and that they learn from eachother.

Microsoft Hiring To Make Window Phone "The Best Camera"

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Microsoft has plans for making "Window Phone the best camera you will ever own" and for that, the company is looking to hire "great people to bring our big vision to reality".

Windows Phone already introduced camera concepts that were later adopted by Android and iOS-powered phones (like the dedicated camera button, the pocket-to-camera feature) and Microsoft is admitting they want to further improve on the imaging features of the platform; "end-to-end photo and camera experience from the hardware through software level" is the team's focus and Microsoft appears to be preparing for a battle against great camera-phone like the iPhone 4S or some high-end Android devices.

You are in a Windows Phone Post

One-and-a-half months after HTC introduced the Radar Windows Phone -- together with the Titan -- at this year's IFA in Berlin, the Taiwanese manufacturer is now officially launching the phone in India.

The phone is HTC's first Mango-device and sports a 1GHz processor, 3.8-inch WVGA screen, 512MB of RAM, 8GB internal storage, f/2.2 lens-equipped five-megapixel camera with improved low-light performance, and a front-facer for video calling and (future) Skype. First Mango Phone Up For Sale In Europe Is Not What You Think

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Japan got its first taste of Mango with the release of the Fujitsu-Toshiba IS12T, but how will Mango be revealed to the rest of the world's markets? Instead of that sort of single-device launch, will we see a glut of WP7.5 handsets released at once? It may not be the grand launch we were hoping for, but it looks like Europe has actually gotten its first Mango device already, and it's definitely not what we expected.

Instead of a new built-for-Mango-from-the-ground-up smartphone, the first one that's being sold with Mango installed in Europe turns out to be our old friend the HTC Mozart. Sure, it's just the old Mozart with new software, but it's still the region's first taste of Mango at retail. Right now the updated Mozart is apparently only being sold in Russia, but perhaps we'll see that spread to the rest of eastern Europe shortly.

The Mozart may be technically first, but we think we'll keep the clock running and wait to see just which new Windows Phone handset, part of the new wave of models coming out, makes it to Europe first.

WhatsApp Finally Hitting Windows Phone Marketplace Within 24H

You are in a Windows Phone Post

It's been quite a journey for the long anticipated WhatsApp Windows Phone client, from the early day rumors, leaks and hints (a tweet about mangos, a job posting and more recently, a teaser image) to a private beta in the Marketplace more recently.

Being contacted for a spot on the private beta team, the WhatsApp developers have issued the following response: "Thanks for your message and interest. We should be releasing a public version to the Marketplace within the next 24 hours, so I don?t think there is much point in sending you a link to the closed beta group". That being said, check often with your Marketplace over the weekend if you are (long) waiting for the WhatsApp client.

Windows Phone Mango is Coming in a Week or Two

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Everyone's anxiously waiting for the huge Windows Phone 7 upgrade to arrive, both in terms of the upgrade to existing phones as well as new phones with new hardware features. Eric Hautala just posted to the Windows Phone blog that it will be coming in the next week or so. That's kind of vague because it sounds like it will be the same kind of thing where certain carriers and certain devices will get the upgrade at certain times. It won't be an all at once thing. Eric also recommends against installing unofficial versions of the update since each device and carrier specific update will be including special customizations that tune your device for optimal usage.

In other words, if you used the Mango for all hack to get the Mango beta on your phone already, plan on restoring your device to the official NoDo build in order to get the real upgrade.

Flixster Updated for Windows Phone Mango

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Today Flixster saw an update that brings some very cool Windows Phone 7.5 Mango features to the app. If you're familiar with Flixster already, you'll know that it offers access to showtimes, movie trailers and Rotten Tomatoes reviews. With the recent upgrade to version 1.6, it now supports fast app switching in Mango and Bing search integration. That means if you're searching for a movie using Bing, you can swipe over to the "apps" tab and get a deep-link into Flixster for whatever movie you were looking at so you can read Rotten Tomatoes reviews or whatnot. It also now supports pinning specific movies or theaters to your start screen. After you pin a movie to the start screen you'll have quick access to that movie in Flixster, but you'll also have a live tile of the movie's poster art that flips around to show you the Rotten Tomato review score. If you pin a theater, it will also have a live tile, but it only flips around to show the name of the theater. Still, having quick access to a specific theater and its showtimes is a great option to have on your start screen.

Windows 8 Could Have Phone Features Too

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Long Zheng has noticed some interesting references to telephony features in Windows 8, both via the Microsoft Build session on live tiles and a Windows 8 App demo on Winrumors. You'll notice a live tile that shows missed calls, another that shows text messages, and in the contact's card you'll see options to text or call the person you're looking at. There's also evidence that the prototype Samsung Slate PC that was given to developers at the Build conference includes a 3G chip with voice calling capabilities as opposed to just data. The radio supports quad-band 2G and peta-band 3G.

This type of integration could point to Windows 8 tablets performing double duty as mobile phones. However, I kind of hope the integration is more of a wireless connection to a separate smaller Windows Phone 7 device. I would love to be able to respond to text messages from a large-screen Windows 8 PC interface while my phone and its SIM card are just sitting on the desk nearby or in a pocket. Being able to initiate a call from the PC instead of having to pick up my mobile phone and use its small-screen interface to make a call would be pretty neat too. Ideally both scenarios would be supported by Windows 8.

Why Doesnt Windows Phone 7 Support Dual Core CPUs?

When some one says their phone has a dual-core processor, that sounds very impressive. It means one side of the processor can be doing one thing while the other side is doing another. It's very advantageous to multitasking scenarios, provided the operating system is designed to handle the two processors well enough to take full advantage of them.

Windows Phone 7 is not designed to take full advantage of multiple processors or multi-threaded applications at this time. Dual core processors take up a lot more electricity than single core processors, and Microsoft has designed Windows Phone 7 to be very fast and fluid on lowly single core, single Ghz processors so that you'll have better battery life and won't feel as much of a need for more powerful processors.

When we asked a Microsoft representative about why Windows Phone 7 Mango didn't support dual core processors, he said that they want to do multiple cores in a big way and that they weren't ready just yet. I?m guessing what he meant could mean a move to the rumored MinWin kernel which will support scaling to any number of processors since it will be the same kernel as Windows 8 and Windows 8 Server. Since the Windows Phone 7 apps are all written using the same tools used to create Windows 8 apps, it will be easier to change architectures AND bring huge performance benefits to all apps globally without the need for specific app optimizations for specific processors. With Windows 8, it sounds like some current Windows Phone 7 apps can be modified to work on multi-processor systems with just one line of code. All of the new Metro style apps being developed for Windows 8 will also support hardware GPU acceleration with no extra effort from the developers. That means with Windows 8 you'll already have the potential for huge amounts of processing power if you want it. Microsoft just needs to bring that kind of scalability over to small smartphone devices along with a user interface that's appropriate for a phone.

Do you think Microsoft will bring the Windows 8 kernel and multi-processor support to Windows Phone 8 "Apollo" or are multi-core CPUs unnecessary on Windows Phone?

Windows Phone Mango Apparently Official And Live In Taiwan

You are in a Windows Phone Post

We are still expecting to hear something official from Microsoft to confirm those September 15 Mango announcement and launch rumors and, while we wait, it appears that the platform refresh went live in Taiwan.

It wasn't supposed to happen until tomorrow, as previous rumors indicate, but it looks like it is now official (and we need to consider the current time in the zone, which is evening already). Those having an HTC Mozart or HD7 will need to head down to an HTC store to have their operating system updated. This, most probably, because Zune is not working in the region.

Foursquare For Windows Phone Updated With Mango Support

Mango is nearing upon us (we're still yet to see whether rumors about today's announcement turn out to be true or not) and applications are being constantly updated to support the Redmond platform refresh.

The official Foursquare client for Windows Phone just got updated to version 2.5. Aside from the usual fixes, the new version brings Mango support. That means fast app switching so that you are no longer presented with the screen that says Resuming. There's also support for App Connect as well as secondary Live Tiles. If you don't have the notification on your Marketplace Tile, fire up the application or just follow the source link below to update.

Tango Windows Phone Video Chat Demoed

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Windows Phone 7.5 Mango hardware is bringing with it front-facing cameras to the platform, and you can't very well have those without needing a video-chat app. Since hearing about HTC's Titan and Radar, we've known that Tango (the multi-platform video chat company, not the most-Mango update) software would be coming to Windows Phone. Now Microsoft has put together a video to show us what we can expect from video calls with Tango.

Microsoft's Aaron Woodman demos the app with the HTC Titan, showing how calls are set up and giving us some early indication of video quality. While the audio's a bit hard to make out, video looks relatively crisp and clear, just like we'd expect it to, but there are some noticeable lag problems.

Tango's currently available for Android and iOS, and is coming soon to PCs and (obviously) Windows Phone.

Another Hint Of WhatsApp Coming To Windows Phone

There wasn't very much information to point towards a Windows Phone client for WhatsApp but there were two bits that kept our hopes up: a tweet about mangos and a job posting. Here's the third one and hopefully there will be an announcement soon!

The image above is hosted on the WhatsApp server and, as you can clearly see, there's a Windows Phone logo standing between iOS and Android, alongside Symbian and BBOS. This teaser image should be a confirmation of things to come and hopefully we don't have to wait long after Mango is out for WhatsApp to hit the Redmond platform and close up the loop.

Microsoft To Launch Windows Phone Mango In Taiwan On 09/16

You are in a Windows Phone Post

For the past couple of days we've been hearing rumors and reports about Microsoft announcing Windows Phone's next update, codenamed Mango, on September 15. OEMs and carriers definitely have a higher-than-normal level of Windows Phone activity so there might be some fire here as we can all see the smoke.

The latest bit on the Mango launch comes from Microsoft TechDays Taiwan 2011 where the audience has been told that the Redmond platform refresh will see the light of day on September 16. Not sure how wave-one devices will get the updates though, or if the updates will be actually ready for that September 16 date, but the buzz is really there. We expect official wording from Microsoft either later today or tomorrow if there's any truth to the rumors.

Microsoft Outs Windows Phone Mango And Apps Demo Video

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Yes, Windows Phone Mango is really close and, to back up recent rumors that talk about an official launch any day now, Microsoft has published a video about Mango and how it is easier to "build easily, build better, build now with Windows Phone".

There's basically nothing new to the video below. It makes a general presentation of Windows Phone Mango, with the Live Tiles updating, fast app switching, connected apps and more. There is also mention of the Developer Tools for those who are dedicated to building applications but all aside, the video is here to maintain the buzz around Mango which can't come soon enough. Check the video out below:

Nokia's First Windows Phone To Ship In One Month? [Update]

You are in a Windows Phone Post

The first Nokia Windows Phone -- we just assume it will be the SeaRay but we've heard names like Nokia 703 and 800 too -- is going to ship in the middle of month October, according to recent reports. We initially heard that Nokia is planning a Europe-only launch limited to six countries this year and one month from now allegedly seems to be the date.

The American market will get its Nokia Windows Phone treat around March 2012 and Australia doesn't seem to be in luck either, as Q1 2012 is the timeframe Nokia made public.

Of course, the phone shipping in Europe mid-October is still just a rumor as we've heard nothing official from Nokia. We didn't even hear anything official from Microsoft either, but a Mango launch announcement is expected really soon (tomorrow, according to some rumors).

Update: Nokia tweeted the following: "We cannot confirm local availability but the 1st Nokia w/ WP devices will ship in Q4 and with volumes in 2012". Corroborate that with rumors of a Europe-only launch in 2011 and Q1 for U.S. and Australia and we get a cleared image.
