Motorola Announces New Webtop Lapdock 100

You are in an Android Post

With phones like the Bionic and Photon 4G, Motorola continues to develop smartphones compatible with Webtop accessories, like the laptop dock made famous by the Atrix earlier this year. With more such phones on the way, Motorola is coming out with an updated model, the Lapdock 100.

For starters, the Lapdock 100 exchanged its black facade for a more charcoal-looking exterior. It has the same sort of large keyboard as before, making typing feel so much more natural than on a tiny touchscreen. The dock's display now measures-in at 10.1 inches, down from the 11.6 original, and although we couldn't find the exact figure, it's likely the same 1366?768 resolution.

The Lapdock 100 will be compatible with future Webtop-enabled models (and existing ones), and weighs just 2.2 pounds. AT&T will be the first to get it, with sales starting online on October 17. Verizon and Sprint will get the dock before the year's end.

Adobe Announces Flash Player 11 With Focus On 3D Gaming

You are in a Smartphone News Post

Adobe's Flash has a bit of an uncertain future on mobile devices. Ever since Apple snubbed it with the iPhone, what was once a mainstay of the PC-based web experience is seeing new technologies like HTML5 arrive to muscle-in on its turf. In order to stay relevant, Adobe needs to keep content providers churning out Flash; one of the ways it can keep developers focused is through the introduction of stand-out features, and that's what it hopes to achieve with the release of Flash Player 11, announced today for an October release.

Flash Player 11 will be arriving on Android systems and the BlackBerry PlayBook; obviously, iOS is out for now, but the platform will still get some new Adobe content thanks to the release of AIR 3.

The big push for Flash Player 11 is gaming, and an effort to produce console-quality 3D and 2D titles. While that sounds particularly stressful for smartphone hardware, Adobe claims FP11 could actually offer performance improvements over previous releases, with a supposed 1000-fold increase in rendering performance, thanks to hardware acceleration. Sounds good, but we'll believe it when we see it.

Beyond gaming, FP11 brings Adobe Flash Access to mobile devices, letting them view DRM-protected premium video content. The first Flash Player releases will start coming out next month; there's no precise information just yet on when it will be available for all platforms.

Boost Announces Samsung Transform Ultra QWERTY Slider For Oct. 7

You are in an Android Post

Up until the beginning of the month, we had known Samsung's Transform Ultra for Boost Mobile as the SPH-M930 QWERTY slider. That all changed thanks to a tipster, hooking us up with some pics of the phone and a few specs. What we didn't know at the time was when Boost would end up releasing the phone; now Boost has officially announced the Transform Ultra, revealing it will arrive on October 7.

The specs we heard for the Transform Ultra are largely confirmed by Boost; the phone will have a 1GHz processor, main three-megapixel camera, and a VGA front-facer. There's no mention of internal storage here, just the inclusion of a 2GB microSD card, but we were told the phone should have 1GB of flash for itself. The handset's price also check-out, going for about $230 when it arrives. That's going to end making it one pretty darn decent deal for no-contract hardware, and maybe the best option going on Boost.

There is one downside to the Transform Ultra's release, though. One day before it comes out, Boost is hiking its data plans for Androids by five bucks a month. Existing customers can grandfather-in, but you'll be a day too late to get the old price on this phone.

HTC Announces Sensation XE With Beats by Dr. Dre Audio

You are in an Android Post

We knew multimedia-oriented phones are going to come out from the Taiwanese manufacturer once it teamed up with Beats by Dr. Dre and the HTC Sensation XE is the first one the phone maker announces.

The phone is a step up from this year's Sensation. The Sensation XE packs a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 768MB RAM, 4.3-inch qHD display, eight-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording, VGA front-facer, 8GB/16GB microSD card included and an improved 1730 mAh battery. It runs Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread with HTC Sense 3.0 on top of it.

Running Android 2.3.4 with HTC Sense 3.0 over the top, it will come boxed with either an 8GB or 16GB microSD card. In the box you'll find the in-ear buds Beats by Dr. Dre which, when plugged in, makes the phone switch to the Beats by Dr. Dre profile, offering a great multimedia experience.

The phone will be available in EMEA and Asian-Pacific regions by the end of this month.

Sony Announces Android-Powered Walkman Z For Japan

If last month we've seen the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman, this time it's Sony alone bringing back the Walkman brand and they are doing it with the help of Android. Sony has just announced the Walkman Z which is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

There will be three variants: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. The phone features a 4.3-WVGA screen, 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 512MB RAM, no camera, HDMI-out, WiFi, Bluetooth, DLNA and FM Radio receiver. On the software side, on top of Android 2.3 Gingerbread Sony will pack a bunch of multimedia applications, such as music player, video player, DLNA client, photo viewer, noise cancelling software and more.

The price will vary from 28,000 yen (around $363) for the 16GB version, 33,000 yen ($429) for the 32GB all the way to 43,000 yen (roughly $559). The Walkman Z will arrive in two color flavors: red and blue.

AT&T Announces Budget-Priced Huawei Imuplse 4G

You are in an Android Post

We heard a rumor late last month about an Android smartphone called the Impulse; it was supposedly made by Samsung, and might be one of the first LTE devices on AT&T's fledgling network, but there wasn't much to go on besides that one render of the phone. As fate would it have it, it looks like the name was spot-on, but nearly everything else about that rumor is turning out to be wrong. In reality, the Impulse is manufactured by Huawei, and while it will find a home on AT&T, it won't be an LTE device.

AT&T announced the Huawei Impulse 4G this morning, with plans to start selling the smartphone on September 18 for about $30 on-contract. As you should be able to tell from that price point, you can forget about dual-cores or upper-tier features. Instead you'll get a handset with a 3.8-inch WVGA display, five-megapixel main camera, and that ships only running Froyo.

One of our eagle-eyed readers spotted the Huawei similarities when we first got that peek at the phone, and suggested it might be the Ideos X5. Sure enough, these specs AT&T has provided match-up with what know of the X5 (below). If this is the same hardware, it should have a processor running at 800MHz and 512MB of RAM.

Samsung Announces Galaxy Note Smartphone (the Stylus is Back!)

You are in an Android Post

And you thought the stylus went extinct along with Windows Mobile of yesteryear? Think again! Companies like HTC, and now Samsung, are bringing back the stylus, this time on capacitive screens. Today Samsung announced the Galaxy Note, a impressively powerful smartphone with a massive 5.3" Super AMOLED (but not S-AMOLED Plus, oddly) display that rocks *slightly beyond* HD resolution, at 1280x800, making for a pixel density of 285. Inside it has the dual-core Exynos that we've come to love, but clocked at a faster-than-Galaxy-S-II 1.4GHz per core. The Galaxy Note will come with Gingerbread, and will be HSPA+ capable. In terms of size and weight, Samsung has managed to keep the Galaxy Note quite lean: it's less than 10mm thick, and weighs 6.3 ounces. As a point of comparison, the Dell Streak, another smartphone/tablet hybrid (but with a 5" display and lower resolution screen), is 7.7 grams, and around the same thickness. There's also plenty of battery power to drive the big display with a 2500mAh battery. note 2
The stylus is actually included within the device, compared to, say, the HTC Flyer, which has no stylus silo built in. It looks like Samsung has done some impressive integration with the stylus, as you can see in the below video.

The question remains whether the Galaxy Note is too big to be a phone. In any case, you'll have time to think about it: no availability has been announced.
