Verizon Joining AT&T With September 27 Mango?

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Earlier today, we heard that AT&T would start pushing out Mango updates to its customers' Windows phone 7 handsets beginning next Tuesday, September 27. Though it's far from confirmed, there's a chance that Verizon could follow suit and get its update started on the very same day.

This tidbit comes courtesy of an online chat log with a Verizon representative. We're well-aware how unreliable such sources can be at times, so treat this rumor with the appropriate level of skepticism.

The chat log shows a user in the midst of a Windows Phone 7 discussion with a Verizon rep. The user asks, "do you know if it will be updated for Verizon same day as other carriers (Sept 27, i believe?)", to which the rep simply responds, "Yes, it will."

The log makes it look as if the user was in the process of asking about ordering a Trophy, so there's the very real possibility that an unscrupulous rep was saying anything necessary to close the deal. We'd like to think we're not that cynical, though, so we'll give this the benefit of the doubt until we hear anything else from Verizon either confirming or denying the news.

Verizon Selling $100 Pantech Breakout LTE Android September 22

You are in an Android Post

We've been keeping our eye on the Pantech Breakout for a little while now, expecting it to launch as the first budget-priced Android using Verizon's high-speed LTE 4G network. Last week we heard that the phone would likely be released this week, on Thursday, September 22. With just a few days to spare, Verizon has finally announced the Breakout, confirming the September 22 launch rumor, and giving the phone a $100 on-contract price tag.

You may not be swayed by the Pantech brand name alone, but look past that to the Breakout's hardware, and you'll find some decent specs for what's becoming a mid-range Android configuration. The phone has a single-core 1GHz processor, four-inch WVGA screen, and five-megapixel rear and VGA front-facing cameras. Pantech includes an 8GB microSD card for storage, and will bring the phone to market running Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Verizon's confirmed one rumored ability we were hoping the Breakout would get: WiFi hotspot support for connecting up to 10 devices. Of course, you probably won't be using close to that many at once, but you have the feature there when you need it.

Pantech just started introducing Android phones to North America earlier this year with the Crossover on AT&T. Any opinions on how its efforts are shaping up so far? Would you buy a Pantech Android over an HTC or Motorola?

Apple To Release iOS 5 GM To Assemblers Last Week Of September?

You are in an iPhone Post

Apple is reportedly preparing to release the Gold Master version of iOS5 to overseas assemblers in the final week of September, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. He also claims that the next iPhone went into mass production in late August.

The Gold Master version of Apple's next OS is likely to contain final code that will eventually be shipped publicly on the phones, so getting it to assemblers by the end of September could prepare for a mid-October launch. According to the same analyst, the iPhone 5 "is expected to look largely the same as the current iPhone 4".

It will reportedly feature the same amount of RAM and the same glass front and back as the current iPhone. While the antenna part will be improved -- thanks to the iPhone 4 Antenna-gate -- "users will not see a discernible difference in its appearance". How is this report different from all the other rumors we've heard? It sure seems to contradict those referring to a curved, aluminum back and a larger screen but we'll have to wait it out and see for ourselves.

Windows Phone 7 Mango Coming September 15?

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Microsoft has yet to clarify the exact release date of Windows Phone 7 Mango, that is, when those with WP7 hardware can expect an OTA update to bring the new operating system to their device. WPCentral is citing three pieces of evidence that point to a September 15 release date for Mango. First, a well-known app firm has told them that indeed, September 15 is the day. Second, a chat with a customer service rep from HTC reveals that September is going to be the month, but that a firm date could not be given. And third, the acclaimed Dell Venue Pro which has been unavailable in the AT&T flavor for quite some time, is now showing a shipping date of September 16, presumably so that it'll be able to ship with the Mango update.
