Work Underway On Bringing Siri To Original iPhone 4 (Update)

You are in an iPhone Post

Now that the iPhone 4S has arrived, new owners of the smartphone have the opportunity to try out the much-hyped Siri voice assistant. Everyone who isn't making the upgrade, though, won't be able to officially use Siri. We make that stipulation, because it's now looking likely that an effort to crack the app will lead to its eventual release for the jailbroken iPhone 4.

The big concern was that Apple might try to do something more extreme than checking what version iPhone you have, like build the app specifically to require hardware features not present on the original iPhone 4. Since there's now a new processor being used, one theory was that the app would be compiled with the A5 in mind. It turns out that's not the case, and (given the proper motivation) Siri should be capable of running on the A4.

Of course, it still remains to be seen just how important the A5's speed is towards making the system usable, but that's something to be worried-about further down the line. For now, work continues on bringing Siri to the iPhone 4 and the fourth-generation iPod touch.

Update: Apparently Steve Troughton-Smith has already managed to port Siri to the iPhone 4 giving one less reason to purchase a new Apple-phone (especially if you're not sold on the A5 chip and the improved camera).

Motorola Droid Pro Finally Getting Gingerbread Update

You are in an Android Post

Motorola revealed back in May that it would be providing Gingerbread updates for a large portion of its Droid family of smartphones, including the Droid Pro. Just a week or so later, we heard that the Droid Pro's Gingerbread update was already heading out to users. That turned out to be a false start, and marked the beginning of a summer plagued by such troubled software releases for Motorola phones. Now that fall's upon us, Motorola and Verizon are trying their hands at this again, and it looks like Gingerbread for the Droid Pro is finally ready to arrive.

Verizon has updated its support documents for the Droid Pro to reflect this new release, bringing the phone up to system software 4.6.8.XT610. The major component of the update is, of course Gingerbread, and all the improvements we've come to expect from it. You'll find plenty of fixes and system tweaks, as well, hopefully keeping your Droid Pro in tip-top operating condition; battery life should be a bit extended, GPS use won't make the Droid Pro reset, and there have been several fixes to SMS behavior.

We've heard that some users are getting the update already, but don't have word on how long it should be before it reaches everyone.

The Google Nexus One managed to stay up-to-date all this time mainly because Mountain View managed to keep its promise and continuously push out refreshes as they were stable. The phone recently got its Android 2.3.6 update.

Sprint Nexus S 4G Receiving Google Wallet-Enabling Update

You are in an Android Post

All signs pointed to it coming, and now Google Wallet is here. First Samsung released a software update to the Nexus S 4G on Sprint that brought the app to the Android phone, followed by Google's official announcement of the service's launch.

Nexus S 4G system software GWK74 is on its way to users currently. As well as installing the Google Wallet app, the software includes security updates for your phone. We haven't heard any estimate as to how long it's expected to reach all NS4G owners.

Of course, to make any use of Google Wallet, you'll need to set up a payment method. Right now, the only major credit card you can use directly is a Citi MasterCard, but you can always jump through a few hoops by signing up for a prepaid Google card, then transferring funds from another credit card to Google's. As a bit of a reward for your efforts, Google is starting-off this first wave of users with a free $10 on their prepaid cards.

Have any NS4G users received Wallet yet and had a chance to test the app? You can use Google's Wallet site to find locations where retailers are accepting the transactions. If you have a chance to swing by one on your way home from work, let us know how the experience went.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo Gets Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread Update

You are in an Android Post

When Sony Ericsson announced the Xperia Arc S and the Xperia Neo V (hardware refresh devices shipping with the new version of Android), they also made it public that Google Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread updates will start rolling-out for all 2011 Xperia models.

According to reports, the Google platform refresh is rolling out as we speak for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo. Aside from the new version of Android, the update brings several other features to the table too, like a new 3D panorama camera feature, Swype, the ability to take screenshots and several other enhancements to Facebook inside Xperia. Version numbers should be bumped from 4.0.A.2.368 to 4.0.1.A.0.283; if you didn't already get the update, wait a little bit more as it is rolling out gradually.

Verizon Motorola Droid X Getting 4.5.605 Keyboard Fix Update

You are in an Android Post

The last time the Verizon Motorola Droid X got an update it was version 4.5.602 back in August and it brought a cornucopia of fixes and improvements to the table. One issue still remained though: the keyboard bug.

According to rumors, Verizon is preparing to roll-out an update on September 19. It will be version 4.5.605 and its sole purpose will be to "resolve keyboard stability and usability issues in order to optimize performance during text entry". The update, even though it's only fixing a single issue, weighs 113MB and, according to those who had the pleasure of testing it, will fix the bug alright but will unfortunately introduce new ones. Let's wait it out and see if it's just an isolated issue or a general one (in which case we hope Verizon and Motorola sort it out before the roll-out process, even if it's delayed a bit).

Apple Preparing iOS 5 Update For Release Around October 10?

You are in an iPhone Post

Some updated timetables for the production run of the iPhone 5, and the release schedule for iOS 5, have come to light thanks to the work of the folks at AppleInsider, as we reported early this morning. The site's since heard a new rumor that hopes to pin down when iOS 5 will be coming as an update to existing iPhone users, based on a warning to employees.

We don't even have a leaked memo to check out here, so if you don't mind listening to some hearsay, the rumor has it that AppleCare operators are being prepped for a massive influx of calls on October 10. Just as retailers are blocking employees from vacationing when they expect the iPhone 5 to arrive, it looks like Apple is taking the same steps to see that customers upgrading from an older iOS version have the help they need.

If you want to take this rumor with a grain of salt, no one would blame you, but the date does fit in with some of the estimations we've been hearing so far. We'll know for certain in just a few weeks, at least.

Nokia's First Windows Phone To Ship In One Month? [Update]

You are in a Windows Phone Post

The first Nokia Windows Phone -- we just assume it will be the SeaRay but we've heard names like Nokia 703 and 800 too -- is going to ship in the middle of month October, according to recent reports. We initially heard that Nokia is planning a Europe-only launch limited to six countries this year and one month from now allegedly seems to be the date.

The American market will get its Nokia Windows Phone treat around March 2012 and Australia doesn't seem to be in luck either, as Q1 2012 is the timeframe Nokia made public.

Of course, the phone shipping in Europe mid-October is still just a rumor as we've heard nothing official from Nokia. We didn't even hear anything official from Microsoft either, but a Mango launch announcement is expected really soon (tomorrow, according to some rumors).

Update: Nokia tweeted the following: "We cannot confirm local availability but the 1st Nokia w/ WP devices will ship in Q4 and with volumes in 2012". Corroborate that with rumors of a Europe-only launch in 2011 and Q1 for U.S. and Australia and we get a cleared image.

Opera Mobile 11.1 Update 2 Brings Security, Bug Fixes

Opera continues to work on improving its alternate browsers, most recently releasing an update to Opera Mobile for Android containing an assortment of bugfixes and security improvements.

Opera Mobile 11.1 update 2 tightens-ups the security of the browser's cache files. Apparently, it had previously been setting reduced permissions that would have let other apps read and modify the cache, creating an avenue for a potential exploit.

If things just weren't looking right when you tried Opera Mobile in the past, you might want to check out some of the display-related fixes in this release. There are specific changes related to resolving blacked-out screens on start-up, making sure colors display correctly, and a host of font-display fixes. Some of the font fixes are specific to Samsung Galaxy smartphones, while others improve rendering for all models.

While we may have our eye on Opera Mobile as a smartphone browser, if you're rocking a tablet, check for the new Honeycomb large-screen mode compatibility mode.

The updated Opera Mobile is available now in the Android Market. Keep in mind, this is Opera's stand-alone browser. For the server-based browser that uses Opera's proxies to speed-up page rendering on slower connections, check out Opera Mini.

iPhone 5: First Screenshot? [Update: Hoax]

You are in an iPhone Post

Update: Apparently this is a semi-elaborate hoax being perpetrated by a gentleman named Richard Windmann of Fort Worth, Texas. He's reportedly been attempting to trick numerous publications with this false story and image. Thanks to the team at MacRumors for the heads up.

This is a screenshot taken from the About screen of an iPhone 5, according to someone who claims to have access to a testing unit of the unannounced handset. The most notable aspect of this image is the alleged storage capacity: it would seem to confirm that the next iPhone will have at least 64GB of flash NAND. However, an even more interesting claim is being made of which there is no proof: the iPhone 5 is said to eschew the iconic hardware home button for a virtual one which appears onscreen.

This configuration apparently allows for a larger screen, although no specific dimensions were given. The unit in question is, naturally, described as being black, and it's not clear if there would be other colors available. The screenshot shows the latest build of iOS 5 (beta 7), although obviously this sort of image is trivial to fake.

Following yesterday's spotting of a likely iPhone 5 eight-megapixel image capture, it seems like details of the highly-anticipated device are slowly starting to come together prior to an expected release next month. There are, however, still more questions than answers at this point.

Note: The shot has been resized to fit our layout; the original is of Retina Display resolution.

Sony Ericsson To Update All Current Xperia Phones To Android ICS

You are in an Android Post

The next version of Android, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich, is going to be released sometime October/November, according to Google's own Eric Schmidt. Then it will be up to OEMs to issue updates for their existing phones (taking longer for some while the others acting faster).

According to a Sony Ericsson representative, all of the manufacturer's 2011 Xperia phones in this year's line-up will be updated to Android Ice Cream Sandwich. That's a lot of phones: Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, Xperia Neo, Xperia Pro, Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V, and Xperia Ray. There are no details of course as per when these updates will start rolling out but it's safe to assume that it will be in 2012 (and we hope for the first half of the year).

Droid Incredible Gingerbread Update Looks Back On-Track

You are in an Android Post

When HTC tweeted yesterday that the Droid Incredible would be getting a long-overdue Gingerbread update sometime in September, we assumed that meant "in a couple weeks". We're still flipping our calendars forward, and there are already signs that the update is nearly upon us, with Verizon updating its Incredible support pages in advance of the update.

As we've discussed many times in the past, this doesn't necessarily mean that the update is imminent, but it's more likely than not that we'll see it within a matter of days. Case in point: Verizon was in the same position with the Incredible a couple weeks back, but ended up putting a stop to the update's distribution.

That code was version 4.06.605.2, and apparently it needed just a little more tweaking before Verizon was comfortable distributing it to its subscribers, because now we're up to 4.06.605.3. The list of new features doesn't give us much of a clue what's been changed since 605.2, so we're left assuming it's a bugfix of some kind or another.

Be on the lookout for the Incredible Gingerbread update to start trickling out anytime now.

Motorola Planning Soak Test for Droid 3 Update

You are in an Android Post

While taking a look at the just-beginning release of the Motorola Droid 2 Global's Gingerbread update, we noted how Motorola's luck seemed to be improving when it came to readying software updates for its phones on Verizon. It looks like the company's sights are now on the new Droid 3, with plans to get an update out sometime this month.

Owners of the phone have reported receiving notification of an upcoming soak test to try out the update with a limited number of users. If everything goes smoothly, we should see the "Sept. 2011" update come out on-schedule.

What would this new software bring to the Droid 3? We haven't seen any official lists, or even leaked copies, but rumors are pointing to fixes for certain battery problems, and enabling video calls with Google Talk. If you end up taking part in the soak, we'd love to hear what changes you notice to your phone.
