HTC Giving Gingerbread to Droid Incredible, Thunderbolt in Sept.

You are in an Android Post

The HTC Droid Incredible has had a long, convoluted path leading towards its future Gingerbread update. We've seen leaks, then outright denials that the smartphone would ever get Gingerbread. That didn't last, and then Verizon looked ready as of a couple weeks ago to start sending the update out. Once again, things cooled down, and though there have been more leaks, we're still waiting for the actual OTA update.

Gingerbread on the Thunderbolt has always seemed like more of a sure thing, not quite hitting the same speedbumps the Incredible did. Of course, it's had its own problems with buggy updates doing more harm than good, and has seen its share of Gingerbread leaks of its own. We were told that the phone should see an official OTA Gingerbread update by October, and that's now looking quite certain.

All these trials should soon be behind the pair, at least according to HTC. The company tweeted today that the updates for both models will be released sometime during September. Of course, Verizon still needs to sign-off on things, but it's a positive step in the right direction.

Motorola Reveals Droid 2 Gingerbread Now Being Distributed

You are in an Android Post

Late last week, it looked like the original Droid 2 was nearly ready to get Gingerbread, with Verizon preparing its support pages for the coming update. Everything seemed ready top go, just waiting for the green light to start heading out. It appears that time is now upon us, with Motorola posting that the update is currently starting to go out.

Those support docs are usually a good sign that an update is imminent, but it's not always the case. We've seen Verizon put such files online, only to wait several weeks to actually get the ball rolling, or even revert the files back to those for a phone's previous update. So, while it's a good sign, it's not exactly a lock. We haven't heard anything new from Verizon, but Motorola now reports that the update is being distributed in phases; no word on how long it's expected to take for the code to reach all Droid 2 owners.

It was a little over three months ago when Motorola made clear its intent to deliver Gingerbread to much of the existing Droid family of smartphones. While it's certainly been a bit of a wait, this one at least beats Motorola's estimation that the updates would be out "before the end of the third quarter or sooner".

Update: Milestone 2 users still have a wait on their hands.

Dj Vu: Apple Reportedly Loses Another iPhone Prototype In Bar

You are in an iPhone Post

Last year, we all got an early look at the iPhone 4 when a misplaced prototype of the smartphone, left behind in a bar by an Apple employee out celebrating, landed in the hands of Gizmodo. The discovery was a coup for the site, giving its readers an exclusive look at the next generation of Apple hardware. This time around, we're still guessing what the company has in store for us, but might we have had a repeat of last year's scoop? A new report says we almost got that chance earlier this summer, when yet another Apple employee lost yet another prototype iPhone in yet another bar.

CNET has learned that Apple engaged the help of the San Francisco Police Department to recover the device, which was lost in a San Francisco tequila bar. Apparently, once the company realized what had happened, in spite of lessons learned following last year's fiasco, it wasted no time in soliciting the cops for assistance before the phone could go public. After tracing the prototype iPhone to its last-reported location, the police interviewed the resident and searched the premises, but came up empty-handed.

That's where our story ends, sadly. Apple never filed a formal police report, and whoever actually did end up with the device may have just sold it on Craigslist, without necessarily realizing the value of such hardware. It's been over a month since the prototype disappeared, so it's looking very likely that it's never going to surface.

Maybe a "no prototypes allowed in bars" rule from now on, huh, Apple?

HTC Eternity WP7 Pictured Again?

You are in a Windows Phone Post

As soon as today, HTC is likely to unveil several new smartphones, including the HTC Omega (a Windows Phone 7.5 device with a single-core 1.5GHz CPU), the HTC Eternity (another Windows Phone 7.5 device but with a huge 4.7" display), plus potentially the HTC Runnymede (an Android phone with the latest 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon chip). So far we've seen the Omega, plus a shot of the Eternity, and we have yet to see Runnymede, except in a very small image on a specification sheet. An online retailer has published what appears to be a clearer render of the Eternity, showing it as a slate device with a design not dissimilar from the Desire HD (with aluminum construction). The Eternity is expected to ship with a 1.5GHz single-core Snapdragon chip with 512MB of RAM, an 8MP rear-facing camera, and a 1.3MP front-facing camera. It'll pack 16GB of storage, a 1650mAh battery, and Windows Phone 7.5 Mango.

Sony Ericsson Reveals 1.4GHz Xperia Arc S

With the IFA ramping-up in Berlin, we're bracing for a ton of new on new smartphones to roll in. One of the first to be announced is a hardware bump to the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, the new Arc S.

If you're already familiar with the Arc, all you need to know about the Arc S is that it will be slightly faster. SE is swapping-out the 1GHz Snapdragon the Arc came with for a 1.4GHz model. That makes for a 40% speed increase on paper, and SE says that you can expect real-world performance to amount to about a 20-25% speed-up; that's not world-shattering, but it's a decent bump that should help keep the handset relevant.

The Xperia Arc S is sticking with the Arc's 4.2-inch FWVGA "Reality Display", 512MB of RAM, and 8.1-megapixel Exmor camera. Like the other new Xperias we've heard about, the Arc S will have SE's latest software tweaks, like Facebook inside Xperia, and a 3D sweep panorama mode that lets you use the phone's 2D camera to generate 3D images for viewing over HDMI on compatible displays.

Look for the Arc S to be available in five colors when it comes out this October.

Windows Phone 7 Mango Coming September 15?

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Microsoft has yet to clarify the exact release date of Windows Phone 7 Mango, that is, when those with WP7 hardware can expect an OTA update to bring the new operating system to their device. WPCentral is citing three pieces of evidence that point to a September 15 release date for Mango. First, a well-known app firm has told them that indeed, September 15 is the day. Second, a chat with a customer service rep from HTC reveals that September is going to be the month, but that a firm date could not be given. And third, the acclaimed Dell Venue Pro which has been unavailable in the AT&T flavor for quite some time, is now showing a shipping date of September 16, presumably so that it'll be able to ship with the Mango update.

Google And NASA Put Smartphones In Space (Video)

You are in an Android Post

Have you ever seen someone else so hard at work on their smartphone that it makes you feel a little embarrassed to be using yours mostly for Angry Birds and YouTube? One of the latest projects we've seen for Android devices is enough to make even us feel like smartphone underachievers, where Nexus S handsets were taken on-board the final Space Shuttle mission for use interfacing with space-bound robots.

A pair of Nexus S phones were hooked up to some MIT-designed SPHERES robotic satellites. The Androids used a WiFi connection to the Shuttle to communicate with astronauts and report on sensor data (not like there was any hope of finding a 3G signal).

Why the Nexus S for this project, or even a smartphone in general? Turns out, it's for some of the same reasons we enjoy them, like relatively high performance compared to their power consumption. The Nexus S in particular was singled-out for being easy to take apart ? something we don't usually consider when evaluating a smartphone, but NASA has its own priorities. Beyond that, Android was identified as a platform NASA's scientists felt was easy to develop code for.

If you're curious to see the sort of apps were used on these heavenly Nexus S models, the Sensor Data Logger, at least, is available in the Android Market.
