Gingerbread on the Thunderbolt has always seemed like more of a sure thing, not quite hitting the same speedbumps the Incredible did. Of course, it's had its own problems with buggy updates doing more harm than good, and has seen its share of Gingerbread leaks of its own. We were told that the phone should see an official OTA Gingerbread update by October, and that's now looking quite certain.
All these trials should soon be behind the pair, at least according to HTC. The company tweeted today that the updates for both models will be released sometime during September. Of course, Verizon still needs to sign-off on things, but it's a positive step in the right direction.

Late last week, it looked like the original Droid 2 was nearly ready to get Gingerbread, with Verizon preparing its support pages for the coming update. Everything seemed ready top go, just waiting for the green light to start heading out. It appears that time is now upon us, with Motorola posting that the update is currently starting to go out.
Last year, we all got an early look at the iPhone 4 when a misplaced prototype of the smartphone, left behind in a bar by an Apple employee out celebrating, landed in the hands of Gizmodo. The discovery was a coup for the site, giving its readers an exclusive look at the next generation of Apple hardware. This time around, we're still guessing what the company has in store for us, but might we have had a repeat of last year's scoop? A new report says we almost got that chance earlier this summer, when yet another Apple employee lost yet another prototype iPhone in yet another bar.
As soon as today, HTC is likely to unveil several new smartphones, including the HTC Omega (a Windows Phone 7.5 device with a single-core 1.5GHz CPU), the HTC Eternity (another Windows Phone 7.5 device but with a huge 4.7" display), plus potentially the HTC Runnymede (an Android phone with the latest 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon chip). So far we've seen the Omega, plus a shot of the Eternity, and we have yet to see Runnymede, except in a very small image on a specification sheet. An online retailer has published what appears to be a clearer render of the Eternity, showing it as a slate device with a design not dissimilar from the Desire HD (with aluminum construction). The Eternity is expected to ship with a 1.5GHz single-core Snapdragon chip with 512MB of RAM, an 8MP rear-facing camera, and a 1.3MP front-facing camera. It'll pack 16GB of storage, a 1650mAh battery, and Windows Phone 7.5 Mango.
Microsoft has yet to clarify the exact release date of Windows Phone 7 Mango, that is, when those with WP7 hardware can expect an OTA update to bring the new operating system to their device. WPCentral is citing three pieces of evidence that point to a September 15 release date for Mango. First, a well-known app firm has told them that indeed, September 15 is the day. Second, a chat with a customer service rep from HTC reveals that September is going to be the month, but that a firm date could not be given. And third, the acclaimed Dell Venue Pro which has been unavailable in the AT&T flavor for quite some time, is now showing a shipping date of September 16, presumably so that it'll be able to ship with the Mango update.
