HTC Titan Software Review (Video)

You are in a Windows Phone Post

After taking a closer look at the hardware of the mighty HTC Titan, we spend some time, in this video, covering the software of the device. It's the fastest device, in terms of CPU speed, currently on the market, if you want a Windows Phone 7 device. Sitting on top of the latest Mango build of WP7, the Titan is indeed snappy, especially when browsing the web. Windows Phone 7 is normally speedy, so adding another 500MHz worth of processing power enhances daily use in certain areas (like gaming, web, and video), but doesn't make for a dramatic improvement when compared to any other Windows Phone 7 device.
As with other HTC Windows Phone devices, there aren't many HTC-specific enhancements, due to the restrictions of the Windows Phone 7 operating system. You'll find the HTC Hub, plus a few other HTC apps like Watch, Notes, Locations, Photo Enhancer, and so on, many of which are available through a special section of the Marketplace.

Coming up soon we'll have our full review of the HTC Titan!

HTC Runnymede Shows Off Piano White and Beats Audio on Video

You are in an Android Post

The Runnymede is expected to have a 1.5GHz single-core processor, 4.7-inch WVGA display, 768MB of RAM, 16GB of storage, eight-megapixel main camera, and 1.3-megapixel webcam. Will probably run Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread with HTC Sense 3.5 on top of it and it is rumored to be launched as the HTC Bass.

Check out the video below to see how the device looks! So far, the piano shining white caught our attention on the front of the phone and we have to admit it appeals more than the matte one on the HTC ChaCha or Radar. Of course, as you'd expect from a Beats-phone, it sports the Beats Audio logo on the back, pretty much like the Sensation XE. Let us know if you like what you see!

Motorola Admiral For Sprint Shown Off On Video

You are in an Android Post

We've seen Motorola's Admiral show up in still images before, but now we have the opportunity to see the phone in action, thanks to an introductory video Sprint has uploaded to YouTube.

There aren't any features mentioned here that we weren't already expecting for the Admiral, but the video does offer a nice once-over of the phone's layout, showing off button arrangement, that may help you get a better sense of its design that you were previously able to. Those hardware buttons lining the Admiral's flanks include one for Sprint's new Direct Connect system, delivering an IDEN-like push-to-talk environment over CDMA

The five-device hotspot support may not be the feature it used to be, but it will still get your gadgets online in a pinch. The Admiral has a 3.1-inch VGA display, 4GB of internal flash storage, and a five-megapixel camera capable of recording 720p video. The 1.2GHz single-core phone will arrive running Android 2.3 and will be ruggedized against dust, shock, and general user clumsiness. There's no word yet on an ETA.

Foursquare Live Tiles and Deep Linking (Video)

You are in a Windows Phone Post

The new Foursquare app for Windows Phone makes use of some of the cool new features and API's available in the coming "Mango" update, and some of them are very useful. The one I like the best is the deep-linking feature. Say you're using Bing's local search, or Bing maps, or the Local Scout and you tap on a location to see more details. Swiping the screen to the left will show the "Apps" tab that lists a few apps that you can jump into and transfer some context sensitive information over. With the new Foursquare app, a Foursquare button shows up there and pressing it will jump straight into a Foursquare search for the location you had been previously looking at. From there you can tap the location and check in right away. You can also pop up the menu bar at the bottom and pin the location's Foursquare check-in card right to your Start screen. This is useful if you check into the same place frequently or if you just want a shortcut to someplace that you plan on checking into later that day.

The app update also supports fast app switching so that there is no "resuming" lag time when switching between Foursquare and other apps. Plus, the primary nearby locations screen now supports a tap-and-hold menu for quick check-ins.

Launcher7 Makes Your Android Look Like WP7 (Video)

You are in an Android Post

If you have a bit of Windows Phone 7 envy, but you're running an Android phone, you can download a free launcher called Launcher7 that will give you the look and feel of WP7, at least from your homescreen. The app lets you change individual tile color, add notifications on any tile for SMS/Phone/Gmail, and you can even customize the size of certain tiles. You can also swipe to the right to get a list of your apps, just like it Windows Phone 7. The only thing missing is real live tiles, but hey, for that you'll need the real thing! You can get Launcher7 from the Android Market. Previous Page Next Page

Motorola Droid Bionic Booting CyanogenMOD7 (Video)

You are in an Android Post

Motorola announced the Droid Bionic two weeks ago and the phone is available for purchase since September 8. We're currently reviewing the device (we've already got the unboxing and the hardware tour) which seems to be already booting CyanogenMod 7.

Looking at the video below you'll see CyanogenMod 7 boot without a drop of sweat on the Droid Bionic. Work is in progress and there are many bugs plus plenty of things not working yet (like radio, charging, battery, graphics are a bit off, camera, audio and so on). On the bright side, touchscreen, accelerometer and adb are working and with the community hard at work, expect to see a fully working version for the Bionic soon.

Tango Windows Phone Video Chat Demoed

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Windows Phone 7.5 Mango hardware is bringing with it front-facing cameras to the platform, and you can't very well have those without needing a video-chat app. Since hearing about HTC's Titan and Radar, we've known that Tango (the multi-platform video chat company, not the most-Mango update) software would be coming to Windows Phone. Now Microsoft has put together a video to show us what we can expect from video calls with Tango.

Microsoft's Aaron Woodman demos the app with the HTC Titan, showing how calls are set up and giving us some early indication of video quality. While the audio's a bit hard to make out, video looks relatively crisp and clear, just like we'd expect it to, but there are some noticeable lag problems.

Tango's currently available for Android and iOS, and is coming soon to PCs and (obviously) Windows Phone.

Microsoft Outs Windows Phone Mango And Apps Demo Video

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Yes, Windows Phone Mango is really close and, to back up recent rumors that talk about an official launch any day now, Microsoft has published a video about Mango and how it is easier to "build easily, build better, build now with Windows Phone".

There's basically nothing new to the video below. It makes a general presentation of Windows Phone Mango, with the Live Tiles updating, fast app switching, connected apps and more. There is also mention of the Developer Tools for those who are dedicated to building applications but all aside, the video is here to maintain the buzz around Mango which can't come soon enough. Check the video out below:

Motorola Droid Bionic Unboxing (Video)

The latest and greatest from Motorola and Verizon is the Droid Bionic. With its wedge-shaped chassis encasing some very high-end hardware, this is the smartphone the others are all envious of.

In this video we'll look around the box, inspect it's contents, and take a first look at the phone itself.

The box itself is wrapped in a sleeve, inside is the box which has remarkably little information and very simple, clean branding. The top of the box is lifted off, under which you'll find the phone with an informative screen protector in place. This smartphone has the battery cover off and protected in a zippered bag, which removes one step when installing the battery and LTE SIM (which is full-sized, not micro-sized).

It includes an "Eco-Moto" micro-USB cable and wall-wart for charging, a 3.8V, 1735mAh Li-Ion battery, and a few instructional manuals.

Missing is a quality headset, and the "recycle your phone" pre-paid mailer that T-Mobile includes with their phones.

In an upcoming video we'll take a closer look at the hardware, and we'll dig into software after that.

HTC Titan Video Showcase

You are in a Windows Phone Post

The HTC Radar is the lower-end of the two Windows Phones the Taiwanese manufacturer announced on September 1. The Titan, with its large 4.7-inch screen couldn't go without a video showcase from HTC showing off all the great features of the phone and the operating system powering it.

Aside from our brief hands-on, the videos below will give you a more detailed take on how the Titan looks, feels and operates. It features a large 4.7-inch WVGA screen, 1.5 GHz single-core processor, 512 MB RAM, 16GB of ROM, 8 megapixel camera with F2.2 lens, dual LED flash, and BSI sensor, 1.3 megapixel front camera and all the usual suspects you'd expect from a Windows Phone Mango. You've Got Warts, and How to Get Rid of Them (Video)

We need to talk. You've got warts. They're ugly. They're unsightly. They're big. They're draining your power... and they're spreading!

No, I'm not talking about the kind of warts that you get on your feet, rather, I'm talking about the kind of warts that are "growing" on your wall and are sucking down electricity 24/7! You read that correctly! Your unsightly wall-warts are consuming power, generating heat, and running up your power bill all the time, even when you're not charging your smartphone, tablet, or Bluetooth headset.

Those warts convert your wall-outlet's AC power into DC power that your gadgets use, but that conversion doesn't stop when your device is fully charged. It doesn't even stop when you unplug your device!

So, how can you save power, and hopefully get rid of those unsightly wall-warts?

Unplug
Your first option is to simply unplug your wall-wart when your device is fully-charged. It's simple, but it might mean you have to wake up in the middle of the night to physically unplug your phone's wall-wart.

Combine
Since most of our devices are USB-powered, you can get a simple powered USB hub with enough ports to charge all your gadgets at once. USB charging usually takes more time than wall-wart charging does, but if you're going to charge all night long, you probably won't even notice. This won't rid you of all your warts, but it will reduce the number to one -- the one needed to power the USB hub

Incorporate
If you want to get rid of those unsightly warts forever, you could get an electrical outlet with USB ports built in! No, they won't let you hack the power grid, but they will let you charge up your device without that ugly wart growing out of your wall.

The U-Socket actually incorporates two USB power ports into a standard two-socket power outlet. You do need to have some basic electrical skills and a "full-depth" electrical box, but once it's all hooked up, it looks great, and saves you power! Who knows, if enough of us install these instead of using wall-warts, we might just save the planet!

These little guys are going to run you around US$25, depending on where you buy them. Try Google Shopping to see who has them in-stock.

Eliminate
Of course, the best way to get rid of wall-warts and save a ton power, is to avoid the power-grid completely. Using a relatively small solar panel (relative to the big ones that you see mounted on houses or buildings) or small wind turbine and a few other components, you can free yourself from the grid -- at least enough to charge up your smartphone.

But we'll have to talk about this option in another article.

HTC Radar Video Showcase (But What's With That Name?)

You are in a Windows Phone Post

The HTC Radar is no stranger to video, already showing up in the spotlight as we gave it a hands-on at the IFA earlier this month. Now we can add to its video r?sum? some official spots produced by HTC, showing off some of the Mango phone's capabilities.

These clips talk hardware design, access to media, and gaming. Maybe more than anything, though, they just make the Radar look cool.

One video in particular gives us some insight into the phone's name, as its tools let you keep current events and info from your social group "all on your radar" (though that connection was pretty obvious).

While we're talking names, we've got to wonder what HTC was thinking when it comes to the Radar and the HTC Holiday, which we believe will end up as the HTC Raider. Two phones by the same manufacturer, coming out around the same time, running different operating systems, and with names as similar as Radar and Raider? That's just begging for confused, unhappy customers. HTC would be wise to change its mind about Raider before it's too late.

Verizon's Motorola Droid Bionic Shows Up Again On Video

You are in an Android Post

You can literally count the hours until Verizon and Motorola will finally launch the Droid Bionic, after it was introduced at the beginning of this year at CES, so it's just normal that more and more pictures and videos of the phone pop up.

In the video below you will not find anything out of the ordinary. It's the Droid Bionic filmed in what appears to be a Verizon store. There's also a comparison with the Droid X2 but what makes the Droid Bionic unique is that it will be the carrier's first dual-core phone with LTE support. With hours until its launch, will you buy the Droid Bionic or will you wait just a little bit more for that Droid Prime?

More on HTC Titan and Radar: Dock, Video Chat, WiFi Sharing, More

You are in a Windows Phone Post

The new HTC Titan and Radar are causing quite the stir among Windows Phone 7 fans: they're the first devices to usher in the era of Windows Phone Mango. Not only that, but they also bring forth front-facing cameras, brawny hardware (especially in the case of the Titan with its 1.5GHz CPU and massive 4.7" display), and svelte designs.

A lot of smaller details about these two devices are surfacing. Here's a round-up of what we're learning:

1. Internet sharing

lint
At the last minute, Microsoft was able to add internet sharing to Mango so that you can use your phone as a WiFi hotspot. This feature will be made available to HTC's two new Windows Phones, but it will not be a feature made available for older HTC hardware like the HD7 and Surround. Given that WiFi sharing is a software feature, and not hardware, we're likely to see the development community come up with a way to get legacy hardware up to speed with this feature.

2. Dock accessory

dock
The Titan and Radar will have an optional dock accessory for use when charging your phone while at work or home. When you insert the device into a cradle, you'll see a special dock application that will display the time, weather, provide multimedia controls, and over shortcuts to certain programs.

3. New slogan for Windows Phone

Are you ready for an ambush of marketing for the second generation of Windows Phone 7? As as a preview, they'll have a new tagline: Put People First. Take a look at the above walkthrough video which makes mention of this new slogan.

4. Attentive phone settings, video chat

As with HTC Android phones, the new HTC Windows Phones have courtesy features, that will, for example, silence your phone if you turn it on its face while it's ringing, or ring louder when it's in your bag. This is done through a new screen in Settings.

Regarding video chat, there's a third-party service out there called Tango, which offers cross-platform video chat, even in Windows Phone 7. Within the next few days, we're likely to hear from Microsoft on a native video chat solution for Windows Phone, likely to be powered by Skype.
