Motorola Droid RAZR Hardware Specs Outed?

You are in an Android Post

It's looking very likely now that the Motorola Spyder/Droid HD is going to be released as the Droid RAZR. We've also been hearing plenty of comparisons between the RAZR and Samsung's Nexus Prime, also expected to be coming to Verizon; both handsets are supposed to be quite high-end, and rumors suggest they'll be directly competing against each other for the attention of Verizon's subscribers. Today we begin to get a picture of just how the RAZR will line-up on a hardware level, with the purported leak of some of the phone's specs.

The source behind this information isn't named, but BGR seems quite confident that the figures are correct; keep in mind, though, that none of this is official. Supposedly, the Droid RAZR will have a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and one gigabyte of RAM. We had heard that 1.2GHz figure before, compared against a 1.5GHz version of the RAZR from earlier in its development. The RAZR is supposed to feature a 4.3-inch display, covered by Gorilla Glass.

Sadly, we don't have an exact measurement for what could be the most interesting part of these specs, the news that the RAZR could be thinner than the latest iPhone. Not just thinner, though, but reportedly faster, too. Despite its svelte construction, the RAZR may also feature an LTE radio for Verizon 4G. Hopefully, we'll be getting a complete run-down on the RAZR's capabilities next week at Motorola's Tuesday event.

Motorola Droid Pro Finally Getting Gingerbread Update

You are in an Android Post

Motorola revealed back in May that it would be providing Gingerbread updates for a large portion of its Droid family of smartphones, including the Droid Pro. Just a week or so later, we heard that the Droid Pro's Gingerbread update was already heading out to users. That turned out to be a false start, and marked the beginning of a summer plagued by such troubled software releases for Motorola phones. Now that fall's upon us, Motorola and Verizon are trying their hands at this again, and it looks like Gingerbread for the Droid Pro is finally ready to arrive.

Verizon has updated its support documents for the Droid Pro to reflect this new release, bringing the phone up to system software 4.6.8.XT610. The major component of the update is, of course Gingerbread, and all the improvements we've come to expect from it. You'll find plenty of fixes and system tweaks, as well, hopefully keeping your Droid Pro in tip-top operating condition; battery life should be a bit extended, GPS use won't make the Droid Pro reset, and there have been several fixes to SMS behavior.

We've heard that some users are getting the update already, but don't have word on how long it should be before it reaches everyone.

Motorola, Verizon Holding October 18 Event; New Droid To Debut?

You are in an Android Post

Samsung may have had to postpone it's Unpacked event with Google, and while we'll have to keep waiting if we want to see what we're all expecting to be the Galaxy Prime along with Ice Cream Sandwich, it looks like we'll have product reveals from other manufacturers to deal with in the meantime, with Motorola just sending out invitations for an event it's throwing with Verizon scheduled for next week, October 18.

Motorola invites attendees to check out "the next big innovation" it's been working on. That sounds a lot like a product announcement, so what could it be? We've heard of a Droid 4 that's being developed, but it's much too early to expect that guy to show up. Far more likely would be the chance to see the Droid HD or Droid RAZR. We heard a rumor that the Droid HD (aka Spyder) was in fact the Droid RAZR itself. Previously, we had been thinking they were indeed two distinct models, and now hopefully this event will put that uncertainty to rest. Another hint this is the path Motorola is walking down: a reference to "spyder" in the invitation's filename.

Notice the razor blade in the clip? Hint, hint. And the formula for Kevlar (which is supposed to be used in the construction of the RAZR)?

The Motorola Droid Bionic is the latest in high-end smartphones from Motorola running Android for the Verizon network. Like its predecessors, the Droid Bionic doesn't fail to deliver a high-end feature set. The Bionic has sleek lines and a very generously-sized screen that is sure to impress. Combined with Verizon's 4G LTE network, this phone is fast in every sense of the word.

BOX CONTENTS

The Droid Bionic comes with a nice box that contains the smartphone, large-capacity 1735mAh Li-Ion battery, wall charger, microUSB sync/charging cable, some guides, and a 16GB microSD card pre-installed. The battery, LTE SIM, and battery cover must be installed prior to first use, but doing so is quick and easy. For such a high-end smartphone, I was surprised that no earbuds were included.

HARDWARE

The Motorola Droid Bionic features a dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor aided by a ULP GeForce GPU and Tegra 2 AP20H chipset with 1GB RAM and 2GB ROM. The 4.3-inch screen features a beautiful TFT capacitive screen. At 540 x 960 and a pixel density of approximately 256 ppi, images are crisp, text is clear, and there's plenty of room for people with larger hands and bigger fingers.

right side
The Bionic includes the usual round-up of sensors: accelerometer, proximity sensor, light sensor, digital compass, and aGPS. guts
As far as wireless goes, the Bionic has you covered with CDMA 800/1900, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO 3G Rev. A (up to 3.1Mbps), 4G LTE WLAN, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot (which requires an additional subscription), and Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and EDR. If you're into wires, in addition to the standard microUSB v2.0 port, the Bionic also features an HDMI port for video-out. ports
The Bionic's rear-facing camera is 8MP (3264x2448 pixels) but can be set for 6MP-widescreen and features auto-focus, dual-LED flash, geo-tagging, face detection, and image stabilization. It can also shoot 1080p HD video. The front-facing camera is VGA and works wonderfully well with Google Talk's video chat feature. top
The build quality of the Droid Bionic is excellent; Motorola used quality materials which makes the phone feel high-end. The battery cover does make a slight squeaking sound right at the USB and HDMI ports, but tolerances are tight and everything fits snugly in place.

CAMERA

As you can see from the samples of still images and HD video, the 8MP camera on the Droid Bionic is nothing short of beautiful. The shutter speed is fast, the video is smooth and fluid, and audio is clean and clear.

SOFTWARE

The user-interface on the Motorola Droid Bionic isn't the "pure" UI that stock versions of the Gingerbread version of Android come with -- but what Motorola has done is very subtle and the changes aren't obtrusive -- in fact the UI changes have what I feel are hints of Honeycomb. Basically, Motorola has built on the stock UI and very subtly improved upon it. Coming from me, that's saying a lot.

As far as pre-installed software ("bloatware") goes, the included apps are mostly unobtrusive. Some of the more notable apps that Motorola included are:
- City ID (for extra caller id information)
- Citrix Receiver (for virtualization and remoting)
- DLNA (for sharing and receiving files from other DLNA devices)
- Files (a file browser)
- GoToMeeting (for participating in online meetings)
- IM (a unified instant messaging client)
- Lets Golf 2 (an amazing looking, but level-limited golfing game)
- Hot Spot (Verizon's proprietary Wi-Fi hotspot app which requires an additional subscription to use)
- MotoPrint (remote printing on supported printers)
- NFL Mobile
- News (for RSS aggregation)
- Slacker FM (for listening to streaming music)
- Verizon Navigator (a pay-per-use or subscription GPS navigation app)
- and a few others

PERFORMANCE

The Droid Bionic is fast -- very fast. Overall performance is great, but may be ahead of what benchmarking utilities can accurately gauge.

Quadrant: 2500, with some graphic anomalies in the video portion of the test
Smartbench 2011: did not complete (likely due to screen resolution)
Linpack: 3.9seconds, 42.885 MFLOPS (multi-threaded)

Although benchmarks are good for comparisons, as many Pocketnow readers have pointed out, they should not be relied on as the only source of comparison. That said, the Droid Bionic is the fastest, most fluid, and the "smoothest" phone I have ever used. It's fast where it needs to be, never lagged or hung-up a single time, and gave the impression of a well-oiled machine.

DATA SPEEDS

When running Speedtest.net on the Droid Bionic, the first thing I noticed was how quick the entire app was -- very fast, very smooth.

Wi-Fi: 18ms ping, 15.72Mbps down, 4.09Mbps up
3G: 181ms ping, 0.39Mbps down, 0.84Mbps up
LTE: 79ms ping, 4.2Mbps down, 1.29Mbps up

I'm not in an area with significantly fast LTE speeds, but some readers have commented that they're seeing LTE speeds in the 20Mbps down range, so the phone is clearly capable of super-fast speeds as long -- as you're under the right data umbrella.

CALL QUALITY

Call quality is good, but not great. I had more dropped and "phantom" calls using Verizon than with the AT&T and T-Mobile phones that I've reviewed recently. It's not a show-stopper, but something that I wouldn't have expected in such a high-end phone and such a good carrier.

BATTERY LIFE

With moderate to heavy use, the huge battery that comes in the Droid Bionic will last about half a day. You'll want to start the day with a full-charge; if using GPS you'll want to charge the device while driving to and from work, and while you're at work, and anywhere in between -- otherwise you won't make it through an entire day. Additionally, if you use your own USB charger you may notice that charging is either very slow, or that the phone doesn't charge at all. If you use the included wall charger you won't have those problems. Even when using the included charger, it takes a long, long time to fully charge the battery.

I recommend that you get the wireless battery charger accessory and a few charging pads so you don't have to worry about plugging in everywhere -- you'll simply set your phone down on the charging pad and won't have to worry about an empty battery.

back

PURCHASING AND AVAILABILITY

The Motorola Droid Bionic is available from retailers like Negri Electronics for around $690, off-contract.

On-contract you can pick up your very own Motorola Droid Bionic for $150 through Amazon.com.

PROS

+ Great build quality
+ Awesome performance
+ Plenty of internal storage
+ Beautiful screen
+ 1080p video recording

CONS

- No earbuds included
- Poor battery life
- Strange audio "popping" and "whine" when using 3rd party earbuds

CONCLUSION

The Droid Bionic is a solid performer, and the smoothest Android-powered smartphone I've used to-date. With the phone's appetite for power, it would have been nice for Verizon to include the accessory back-plate for wireless charging as a standard feature, just to help make it through the day -- but once you're aware of the limitation and look for opportunities in your daily routine to top-off the battery, you'll be fine.

The audio anomalies that many have experienced seem to be random and intermittent, and might be mitigated by using high-end earphones. Since the phone doesn't come with any earbuds, we're left wondering if it's the quality of 3rd party earbuds, or the phone itself that's responsible for the noise.

Overall, the phone is simply amazing, even with its very few shortcomings. We rate the Motorola Droid Bionic a 4.5/5.

HTC Vigor Arriving As Droid Incredible HD On October 13?

You are in an Android Post

When we see inconsistencies in leaked documents that cross our path, our Spidey sense goes all a-tingling ? fake or mistake? People make typos, and internal documents not meant for public consumption aren't going to get the same level of scrutiny as a press release might (not that we haven't seen our share of typos there). Then again, what could be a copy-and-paste gaffe might just as easily point to a shoddy hoax job. It's with this balancing act on our mind that we turn to the latest rumor to pop up, that the HTC Vigor will be coming to Verizon as the Droid Incredible HD on October 13.

While much of the screenshot at the source of this information looks legit enough, there's a troubling contradiction where two subsequent bullet points describe the smartphone's screen as first WVGA, and then the 720p HD we were expecting; it can't very well be both.

We were starting to think Vigor would be the phone's retail name, but there's some logic to the Incredible HD. After all, we've also heard that the Vigor would become the Thunderbolt 2, and the original Thunderbolt was first on our radar as the Incredible HD.

For now, this rumor is definitely interesting, and we'll be keeping an eye on the thirteenth, but given the circumstances, we'll wait for something more in the way of confirmation before we start accepting it.

Motorola Droid Bionic Won't Stop Whining

You are in an Android Post

Owners of the Droid Bionic are reporting widespread problems with the phone's audio output, resulting in a high-pitched squeal that is annoying many to no end.

The problem is most noticeable when listening to audio with headphones. You won't hear anything when nothing's playing, but if you wait for a quiet portion (though with the phone still outputting audio), you may hear the distinctive whine for a few seconds.

There as many theories for its presence as there are work-arounds to avoid it. One likely theory, though unfortunately one that doesn't sound fixable via software update, is that a flaw in the phone's power supply or ground wiring introduces this feedback in the audio amplification stage. You might have luck being able to suppress the sound by turning your phone's volume all the way up, and then using an in-cord volume control to adjust your headphones; even if that's sufficient, you shouldn't have to buy additional hardware for your brand-new phone to work right.

Motorola is reportedly looking into the issue, but we don't have any estimate on when a fix might be ready.

Verizon Motorola Droid X Getting 4.5.605 Keyboard Fix Update

You are in an Android Post

The last time the Verizon Motorola Droid X got an update it was version 4.5.602 back in August and it brought a cornucopia of fixes and improvements to the table. One issue still remained though: the keyboard bug.

According to rumors, Verizon is preparing to roll-out an update on September 19. It will be version 4.5.605 and its sole purpose will be to "resolve keyboard stability and usability issues in order to optimize performance during text entry". The update, even though it's only fixing a single issue, weighs 113MB and, according to those who had the pleasure of testing it, will fix the bug alright but will unfortunately introduce new ones. Let's wait it out and see if it's just an isolated issue or a general one (in which case we hope Verizon and Motorola sort it out before the roll-out process, even if it's delayed a bit).

Motorola Droid Bionic Booting CyanogenMOD7 (Video)

You are in an Android Post

Motorola announced the Droid Bionic two weeks ago and the phone is available for purchase since September 8. We're currently reviewing the device (we've already got the unboxing and the hardware tour) which seems to be already booting CyanogenMod 7.

Looking at the video below you'll see CyanogenMod 7 boot without a drop of sweat on the Droid Bionic. Work is in progress and there are many bugs plus plenty of things not working yet (like radio, charging, battery, graphics are a bit off, camera, audio and so on). On the bright side, touchscreen, accelerometer and adb are working and with the community hard at work, expect to see a fully working version for the Bionic soon.

Motorola Droid Bionic Unboxing (Video)

The latest and greatest from Motorola and Verizon is the Droid Bionic. With its wedge-shaped chassis encasing some very high-end hardware, this is the smartphone the others are all envious of.

In this video we'll look around the box, inspect it's contents, and take a first look at the phone itself.

The box itself is wrapped in a sleeve, inside is the box which has remarkably little information and very simple, clean branding. The top of the box is lifted off, under which you'll find the phone with an informative screen protector in place. This smartphone has the battery cover off and protected in a zippered bag, which removes one step when installing the battery and LTE SIM (which is full-sized, not micro-sized).

It includes an "Eco-Moto" micro-USB cable and wall-wart for charging, a 3.8V, 1735mAh Li-Ion battery, and a few instructional manuals.

Missing is a quality headset, and the "recycle your phone" pre-paid mailer that T-Mobile includes with their phones.

In an upcoming video we'll take a closer look at the hardware, and we'll dig into software after that.

Verizon And Motorola Officially Launch the Droid Bionic

You are in an Android Post

It's always a pleasure to see phones being launched before the rumored launch date even if it's just a couple of hours early. Verizon and Motorola today officially announced the highly anticipated Motorola Droid Bionic, presented at this year's CES in January, then pulled for a facelift and now finally launched.

The phone will be available starting tomorrow, September 8, as the carrier's first dual-core phone to support 4G LTE. The Droid Bionic sports a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 4.3-inch qHD display, eight-megapixel autofocus camera with flash and 1080p HD video capture, front-facing camera for video chat, HDMI-out, and 32 GB memory out of which 16 GB on board and 16 GB microSD card pre-installed (with support for 32GB cards). The phone runs Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread out of the box with add-on apps preinstalled like MOTOPRINT (print via Wi-Fi-enabled printers) and Adobe Flash.

The phone supports wireless charger and it will be available in Verizon Wireless Stores as well as online on September 8 for $299.99 with a new two-year contract. Accessory-wise, the Droid Bionic can be used with a lapdock ($299.97), HD Station ($99.99) and an Adapter for Webtop Application ($29.99). The Vehicle Navigation Dock will be available for $39.99 and the Battery Dock will be available for $49.99.

Motorola Droid Bionic Now Available From Verizon

You are in an Android Post

After a long period of waiting -- since it was first introduced this January at CES and then went through a facelift procedure -- the Motorola Droid Bionic was finally introduced yesterday by the OEM together with the carrier.

As promised, the phone is available as of now and it goes for $299.99 with a two-year contract. If you decide to buy only the phone it will cost you $589.99 but you'll get a dual-core 1GHz CPU, 1 GB of RAM, 4.3-inch qHD display, eight-megapixel autofocus camera with flash and 1080p HD video capture, front-facing camera for video chat, HDMI-out, and 32 GB memory out of which 16 GB on board and 16 GB microSD card pre-installed (with support for 32GB cards).

There's also a deal for you over at Amazon if you're into grabbing the Droid Bionic. They have it for $199.99 if you sign a two-year contract but the phone is only backordered so you'll probably have to wait a couple of days until you get it. Still, worth the $100 you save!

Droid Incredible Gingerbread Update Looks Back On-Track

You are in an Android Post

When HTC tweeted yesterday that the Droid Incredible would be getting a long-overdue Gingerbread update sometime in September, we assumed that meant "in a couple weeks". We're still flipping our calendars forward, and there are already signs that the update is nearly upon us, with Verizon updating its Incredible support pages in advance of the update.

As we've discussed many times in the past, this doesn't necessarily mean that the update is imminent, but it's more likely than not that we'll see it within a matter of days. Case in point: Verizon was in the same position with the Incredible a couple weeks back, but ended up putting a stop to the update's distribution.

That code was version 4.06.605.2, and apparently it needed just a little more tweaking before Verizon was comfortable distributing it to its subscribers, because now we're up to 4.06.605.3. The list of new features doesn't give us much of a clue what's been changed since 605.2, so we're left assuming it's a bugfix of some kind or another.

Be on the lookout for the Incredible Gingerbread update to start trickling out anytime now.

Motorola Planning Soak Test for Droid 3 Update

You are in an Android Post

While taking a look at the just-beginning release of the Motorola Droid 2 Global's Gingerbread update, we noted how Motorola's luck seemed to be improving when it came to readying software updates for its phones on Verizon. It looks like the company's sights are now on the new Droid 3, with plans to get an update out sometime this month.

Owners of the phone have reported receiving notification of an upcoming soak test to try out the update with a limited number of users. If everything goes smoothly, we should see the "Sept. 2011" update come out on-schedule.

What would this new software bring to the Droid 3? We haven't seen any official lists, or even leaked copies, but rumors are pointing to fixes for certain battery problems, and enabling video calls with Google Talk. If you end up taking part in the soak, we'd love to hear what changes you notice to your phone.

Verizon's Motorola Droid Bionic Shows Up Again On Video

You are in an Android Post

You can literally count the hours until Verizon and Motorola will finally launch the Droid Bionic, after it was introduced at the beginning of this year at CES, so it's just normal that more and more pictures and videos of the phone pop up.

In the video below you will not find anything out of the ordinary. It's the Droid Bionic filmed in what appears to be a Verizon store. There's also a comparison with the Droid X2 but what makes the Droid Bionic unique is that it will be the carrier's first dual-core phone with LTE support. With hours until its launch, will you buy the Droid Bionic or will you wait just a little bit more for that Droid Prime?

HTC Giving Gingerbread to Droid Incredible, Thunderbolt in Sept.

You are in an Android Post

The HTC Droid Incredible has had a long, convoluted path leading towards its future Gingerbread update. We've seen leaks, then outright denials that the smartphone would ever get Gingerbread. That didn't last, and then Verizon looked ready as of a couple weeks ago to start sending the update out. Once again, things cooled down, and though there have been more leaks, we're still waiting for the actual OTA update.

Gingerbread on the Thunderbolt has always seemed like more of a sure thing, not quite hitting the same speedbumps the Incredible did. Of course, it's had its own problems with buggy updates doing more harm than good, and has seen its share of Gingerbread leaks of its own. We were told that the phone should see an official OTA Gingerbread update by October, and that's now looking quite certain.

All these trials should soon be behind the pair, at least according to HTC. The company tweeted today that the updates for both models will be released sometime during September. Of course, Verizon still needs to sign-off on things, but it's a positive step in the right direction.

Motorola Reveals Droid 2 Gingerbread Now Being Distributed

You are in an Android Post

Late last week, it looked like the original Droid 2 was nearly ready to get Gingerbread, with Verizon preparing its support pages for the coming update. Everything seemed ready top go, just waiting for the green light to start heading out. It appears that time is now upon us, with Motorola posting that the update is currently starting to go out.

Those support docs are usually a good sign that an update is imminent, but it's not always the case. We've seen Verizon put such files online, only to wait several weeks to actually get the ball rolling, or even revert the files back to those for a phone's previous update. So, while it's a good sign, it's not exactly a lock. We haven't heard anything new from Verizon, but Motorola now reports that the update is being distributed in phases; no word on how long it's expected to take for the code to reach all Droid 2 owners.

It was a little over three months ago when Motorola made clear its intent to deliver Gingerbread to much of the existing Droid family of smartphones. While it's certainly been a bit of a wait, this one at least beats Motorola's estimation that the updates would be out "before the end of the third quarter or sooner".

Update: Milestone 2 users still have a wait on their hands.

Now that the Motorola Droid Bionic has been re-jiggered, re-outfitted, and prepped for a release on Verizon's LTE network, we've just been left wondering when the Android smartphone would finally be available for sale. There have been plenty of rumors, and lots of leaked roadmaps, but nothing absolutely concrete. September 8 has been looking like the most likely ETA, popping up in numerous places, but we've also been misled by reports echoing that support for the eighth that have turned out to be somewhat less than authorized. Maddeningly, Verizon continues to remain tight-lipped about the Bionic's release, but that doesn't stop more and more evidence from piling up. The latest we've seen makes a strong case for the eighth, with a television spot for the phone referencing the date.

Roadmaps can always be changed, but putting the date out in public like this makes it far more likely that Verizon and Motorola are committed to it. The commercial in question is mostly the same as the one we looked at earlier, but now includes the text "09.08.11" in its final moments. While we suppose the ad never actually refers to it as the Bionic's release date (what else could it be? The start of pre-orders?), the simplest explanation seems most reasonable. Chances are, we'll be seeing the Bionic hit stores this time next week.
