HTC Wildfire S Software Review (Video)

You are in an Android Post HTC Wildfire S Software Review

The HTC Wildfire S has been around for quite a while in Europe and Asia, but it's only recently made its debut in the United States. Released by T-Mobile, HTC's Wildfire S is a compact, entry-level, Android-powered smartphone with a small screen, and a "slow" processor.

In this in-depth, detailed video we'll look at all the built-in apps, HTC's Sense UI, and run some benchmarks to see just how well this little phone performs.

Motorola Droid Bionic TV Ad Tips Release Date?

You are in an Android Post

Now that the Motorola Droid Bionic has been re-jiggered, re-outfitted, and prepped for a release on Verizon's LTE network, we've just been left wondering when the Android smartphone would finally be available for sale. There have been plenty of rumors, and lots of leaked roadmaps, but nothing absolutely concrete. September 8 has been looking like the most likely ETA, popping up in numerous places, but we've also been misled by reports echoing that support for the eighth that have turned out to be somewhat less than authorized. Maddeningly, Verizon continues to remain tight-lipped about the Bionic's release, but that doesn't stop more and more evidence from piling up. The latest we've seen makes a strong case for the eighth, with a television spot for the phone referencing the date.

Roadmaps can always be changed, but putting the date out in public like this makes it far more likely that Verizon and Motorola are committed to it. The commercial in question is mostly the same as the one we looked at earlier, but now includes the text "09.08.11" in its final moments. While we suppose the ad never actually refers to it as the Bionic's release date (what else could it be? The start of pre-orders?), the simplest explanation seems most reasonable. Chances are, we'll be seeing the Bionic hit stores this time next week.

Google Voice Android App Gets Bugfixes, Improved Offline Support

You are in an Android Post

It's been a couple months since Google last released an update to its Google Voice app for Android. That last one was pretty darn minor, with the most notable change being some more ecological power management. Google's back with a new update to the software, this time actually fixing some annoying bugs.

If you've tried Google Voice out, you've probably noticed some odd behavior when trying to play back voicemails you've received, where the message would stop running shortly after you began listening, requiring you to hit "play" a second time. With Google Voice 0.4.2.34, voicemail playback will now work as planned, no longer requiring that second tap.

Unlike a traditional VoIP app, Google Voice uses normal voice services to connect you, after routing you to an access number to initiate the call. In the past, the app would negotiate this setup with its servers each time you wanted to dial. Now, you'll no longer need an active data connection each and every time you want to call someone ? only that very first time.

There's also a fix for an issue that would delay Android notifications from showing up on time, and new warning messages advising if the phone has no data connection when you go to write a text message. Look for the updated app in the Android Market today.

HTC Mango Windows Phone Graces The Halls Of The FCC

You are in a Windows Phone Post

We've heard of several names for future HTC Windows Phone devices, and at least a few of them should be materializing as we start to see more Mango hardware arrive. Earlier this month, two of them showed up with the Bluetooth SIG, the PI06XXX and PI39XXX varieties. While it was nice to see that some of those code names we heard of were becoming hardware tasked for release, we didn't glean much out of the find. We're still looking for more information on these smartphones, and as if to help us out, today the FCC published the certification paperwork for one such model, the HTC PI39110.

Knowing that model number will make identifying future information on the phone a little easier, but once again, this revelation still leaves us with a lot of questions about the smartphone. The FCC docs clearly mention that the PI39110 is a Windows Phone device; other than that, details are sparse. Maybe more telling than what's here, though, is what's not.

The FCC tested the phone for voice and 2G data on the 850 and 1900MHz bands used by AT&T in the States, but there's no mention of any analysis of its 3G capabilities. Perhaps we're looking at a quad-band GSM device that's primarily going to be released in Europe/Asia, and so has the 3G bands to match? We could still see a similar model in the US, as another iteration under the PI39XXX banner, but the FCC has yet to spill the beans on any such model.

Update: This PI39XXX has shown up again, in the UAProf record for the TITAN X310e we just talked about. That would make this baby what we knew as the HTC Eternity.

HTC Debuts Radar and Titan Windows Phone Mango Handsets

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Londoners have been invited to an HTC event that's currently underway, where the company promised to show them "what's next". A rumor said that this shindig would be a platform for the company to highlight some of its new Windows Phone handsets, rather than anything Android. Sure enough, Mango is the word, and so far HTC has debuted the Radar and Titan Windows Phone smartphones.

We had heard that the Radar (pictured above) might just be the HTC Omega that's been in our sights for a while now, and sure enough, it is. The less-powerful of the two models, the Radar was expected to feature a 1.4 or 1.5GHz processor, but it seems that HTC will be sticking with a 1GHz chip. With a 3.8-inch screen, 512MB of RAM and 8GB storage, it's positively Trophy-esque. It differs mainly in its camera setup, including an f/2.2 lens for low-light-level performance, and the front-facing camera we had heard about earlier.

The Titan (below), on the other hand, could be a Windows Phone powerhouse. This is what we knew as the Eternity, with a giant 4.7-inch screen. Here, the rumored specs check out better, with a 1.5GHz CPU, 512MB of RAM, and 16GB storage. The Titan's a hair under a centimeter thick, so it manages to stay thin despite the large display. It will have the same low-light performance as the Radar, but with an eight-megapixel sensor versus the Radar's five. Both model will, of course, arrive running Mango. Price and availability have yet to be revealed.

HTC Radar (Omega) Shown on Video

You are in a Windows Phone Post

We revealed to you some pretty clear press shots of the upcoming HTC Omega Windows Phone 7.5 device just about a week ago, and we also suggested that the consumer name for the Omega would be HTC Radar. New video today confirms that the Omega is indeed a white Windows Phone 7.5 handset that will go by the name Radar. It'll have an 3.8" SLCD display with 8GB of storage, and most likely (though still unconfirmed) a 1.4GHz single-core Qualcomm chip. We're most curious to hear about the integration of the front-facing camera, which we're thinking might have something to do with Skype, which is supposed to see some last-minute integration with Mango.

Smartphone Location-Gathering Concerns Target Microsoft

You are in a Windows Phone Post

Back in the spring, there was a bit of a kerfuffle surrounding smartphones and privacy violations, with accusations flying around about gathering location data and tracking users without their knowledge or permission. Ultimately, the reaction may have been disproportionate to the actual impact of any questionable data gathering, but it did get the public thinking about the issues surrounding their mobile privacy. We would have hoped that companies were paying attention and had taken steps to avoid that kind of mess again, but it looks some aftershocks are still being felt; a new lawsuit accuses Microsoft of using the Windows Phone camera app to surreptitiously gather data without permission.

According to the suit, seeking class action status, use of the camera sends Microsoft your phone's location data, without ever getting permission to do so. If this claim is accurate, it would appear to go against statements the company made to Congress that it only collected such information with express permission.

This does sound bad for Microsoft, but right now we don't have all the facts. We'd like to see some connection logs, at least, before we pass judgment.
