The problem is most noticeable when listening to audio with headphones. You won't hear anything when nothing's playing, but if you wait for a quiet portion (though with the phone still outputting audio), you may hear the distinctive whine for a few seconds.
There as many theories for its presence as there are work-arounds to avoid it. One likely theory, though unfortunately one that doesn't sound fixable via software update, is that a flaw in the phone's power supply or ground wiring introduces this feedback in the audio amplification stage. You might have luck being able to suppress the sound by turning your phone's volume all the way up, and then using an in-cord volume control to adjust your headphones; even if that's sufficient, you shouldn't have to buy additional hardware for your brand-new phone to work right.
Motorola is reportedly looking into the issue, but we don't have any estimate on when a fix might be ready.
